Can someone explain the main differences between forensic accounting/audit vs. forensic intelligence in terms of jobs and projects? Do most large accounting and consulting firms have both?

Thanks!

Forensic audit is basically audit on steroids. Someone found fraud. Now it’s your job to figure out exactly what happened, how it happened, how much was lost, what business units/processes/accounts are compromised, etc.

Forensic accounting is a bit of a catch-all term that probably also captures things like insurance claims, corporate investigations, litigation support/disputes advisory, and international arbitration matters

My understanding from roles I’ve seen listed as forensic intelligence is that it’s more research oriented. A forensic auditor might directly focus on testing the entire population of an account where fraud was found day in and day out. A forensic accountant might directly focus on analyzing discovery from a lawsuit that is “their case” for several months. But someone in forensic intelligence is probably in more of a support role for multiple forensic auditors/accountants doing things like researching entities and people that the forensic auditors/accountants identified during their work and pulling information like location of operations or residence, asset tracing, business/governmental/personal relationships, regulatory/criminal histories, etc.

Forensic accounting is more geared towards financial investigations and you work more with investigations with accounting and tax issues. Intelligence group are usually non accountants- who deal with reputational risk issues - so non financial due diligence.

Can you link a forensic intelligence job posting as that is not a term I am familiar with?

I saw a position open for Kroll for a Sr. Forensic Intelligence Analyst but unfortunately the posting was taken down.

If anyone wants to be a Forensic Accountant for federal Law Enforcement in DC (not remote) PM me for a referral - Deloitte is actively hiring for this position. You’ll be working active money laundering cases alongside federal LE agents. CPA strongly preferred, some audit experience a plus too. CFE, CAMS, or other related certs also a bonus. Must be able to pass a security clearance.
