Can someone explain the negative attitude towards unlimited pto? Is unlimited pto not really unlimited? And if not how does it compare?

If you don’t take vacation, the firm owes you cash for the vacation hours accrued. If unlimited pto, there is no pay out.

PTO impact utilization in the sense that you are not working in your PTO. However, if you were unassigned- unassigned time vs PTO has the same impact on your utilization- it brings it down.

In reality it has a negative connotation for people to take vacation. Previously everybody has a set days of vacation and if we take vacation team will think we’re taking what we deserve.

like

At Deloitte audit US, managers get 30 days with one year worth of PTO being eligible for rollforward.

It’s mainly the fact that you don’t get paid pto when you leave, and studies have shown people take less pto under the unlimited pto policies. Also, I feel like people that leave will have built up larger pto balances (since they are working so much or just not taking it).

Because when you have PTO you have to use its easier to get it approved, unlimited means you never lose any so it gives the firm excuses to delay vacations

like

When PTO is fixed you know you've earned it and teams will respect it. When PTO is unlimited it loses tangible value and you're no longer entitled to it in the same way. Studiez at other companies consistently show people end up taking less vacation when it is "unlimited". This is one of the reasons why I left the firm last month.

People take less when it’s unlimited.

I think the potential negative thing would be that if you're team or your schedule don't allow you to take the vacation you want, you feel less entitled to it because its unlimited, whereas with limited vacation its a finite thing you need to use up. I feel like this is really a problem for staff- if you are a senior and above and have built up a good reputation with your teams and take control over your own schedule, shouldn't be a problem to take as much as you need.

I have left Deloitte after accepting another offer ( waiting to start the new role and taking time off between) . Now another dream role reached out to me for an interview. Should I tell them I am no longer with Deloitte if the HR asks? They had my old resume. Has anyone been though this situation? My main dilemma is I don’t know what to say why I left the job since the main reason was the new offer.
