Do you make less than $63,000? If not, your friend is certainly not making more than you. First, unemployment benefits are taxable; second, even if your friend lived in the state with the highest weekly unemployment benefit (New Jersey - 60% of your average weekly income up to a max of $713 a week), this would translate to about a 63k annual salary. Except the additional $600 only lasts for 6 months (and unemployment also 6 months), so cut that in half + extra stress of being unemployed during crisis. I would be much more grateful to have a job right now, even if I did make slightly less than 60k.
@OP how could you possibly know that this is the attitude of “a significant portion of those collecting benefits”? I understand that it must feel frustrating to hear your friend feels that way, but don’t let that taint your view of all others collecting benefits.
How about you quit whining and do something about it that will get you fired too? Then you can join your friend and somebody who actually wants to stay employed and can do basic math will be able to keep their job instead of yiu
Slalom you like a tool.. maybe use those 2 Ivy League masters and learn some real compassion
Op/
@OP and others supporting the OP... you clearly live in a privileged bubble and have a privileged circle of friends. You’re also clearly out of touch with the reality many others face. The majority of Americans who need this $$$ are not the ones you interact with or even realize exist. I’m disappointed that you think most people who qualify for these new benefits are abusing the system.
PS- were you a Buttigieg supporter? Lol
Look I’m not on OP’s side, but let’s be perfectly clear. The average American makes like $60k, not $30k
Don’t know why you are getting shit from these people. 63k a year for doing nothing? Sign me up! Sure, I make a little more than that now, but once you factor in taxes it’s probably a maybe 10k difference in take home. I’ll gladly take that for getting to sit on my $&@ and do nothing...
I would not. I like my job...
Vote for conservatives. True conservatives in Congress didn’t like this aspect of paying people more than what they were making before and protested against it.
Common sense = pay people what they lost in income, NOT MORE than that
They have to pay out of pocket for health insurance so they aren’t really making more if you factor in total benefits.
Still, I don’t feel people should be receiving more money than their salary was
Here's the math for my state (VA):
-Standard unemployment maxes out at $378 per week on a pre-unemployment annualized salary of $37.8k
-Expanded unemployment now maxes out at $978 per week on a pre-unemployment annualized salary of $37.8k, resulting in an annualized unemployment pay of $50.8k
Just as a point of reference, median individual income is ~$47k here, so that's potentially a hefty portion of the state population who will/would be receiving UI benefits that come out to higher than their pre-unemployment salary.
As another point of reference, I was briefly on unemployment here in 2013 after a surprise layoff. I would've killed to have gotten the extra $600 per week then, though it wouldn't have come close to my pre-unemployment salary.
SA1 oops. sorry
OP I also dont get why these people are attacking/questioning you. You earn the value you created, no matter by labour, by capital by anything. To maintain the stability of the society and help those who unfortunately suffers from unemployment for a short period of time, sure, but the benefit simply cannot go that high. This country has not reached actual communism when the productivity can support people with minimal human creation of value, so you still do need stimulation for the society to work, and the most straightforward stimulus is money.
The economists are almost universally applauding and there is a reason. Figuring out rules takes time. For everyone thinking there it’s obvious to limit the amounts, there will be those who say they can figure out a different formula (90%, 110%, based on last years income, except if you hadn’t paid taxes yet, what about self employed, etc).
The more days you spend debating, the longer it takes to get people money. Recently unemployed need money today. The longer they don’t have it, the bigger the impact and larger chance it takes longer for them to recover. Lessons from past stimulus was go big and sort out overpayments later rather than take too much time to figure out details.
BTW...most worked up about cash payments. Double dipping in my estimate (although 2018 was a really bad year and I’ll get it). Right now I still have a job (barely), but I’d like some money to be there in a month if I loose it.
I think they are doing a better job with the big corporations this time than bank bailouts and taking profits in the future. I want my employer to be stable enough to give me a paycheck. Nice for mom and pop shops... but majority of Americans depend on big companies for income.
Dept of Labor for each state has full details.
wait how come?
Just remember that unemployment is taxed and depending on the state it isn’t pulled out of the check...
Does unemployment really extend above the original salary?? That’s so confusing
Yep. The $600 is not prorated. Everyone gets it
The $600 a week is until July 31st and isn’t retroactive.

It’s not a guarantee. You would have look at precedents and history data.
This question might be off topic.... it since it’s around unemployment benefits... I was laid off back in October... but i have been actively applying and interviews for roles in Atlanta, will be relocating there in summer. I’m currently in Michigan. Can I apply for unemployment here in Michigan even though I’m applying for job in GA??
OP... I might just take u up on that offer ... 🤓.
Even tho the office was in Atlanta... I was working remotely..: since I travelled extensively. So my residence was in Michigan.
Unemployment at least in Illinois is 47% of what you were making with a cap of $484 per week. You cannot make more than what you were making. My partners already applied for unemployment and it's not more than what she was making.
And the extra $600 is only until the end of July so it is temporary.
