Can someone explain why low carb is a popular diet? Does the source of my calories (fat, carbs, protein) matter as long as I maintain healthy calorie intake? Why?

BCG I like the article and I agree calorie count matters.

To oversimplify, the low carb diet trend comes down to this: eating carbohydrates, especially simple carbohydrates, spikes your blood sugar. Spiking your blood sugar is undesirable for two main reasons: 1) the post-spike crash leads to hunger and oftentimes overeating (can be avoided with self control and the calories in out argument), and more importantly 2) when your blood sugar spikes, your body goes into fat storing mode vs fat burning mode.

1 is typically why people recommend brown rice or whole wheat bread over white bread (quantity/calories is still king). 2 is the main reason people follow the keto/low carb way of eating. Getting your body to burn fat is going to help you lose weight faster than simply counting calories in out (not to mention the health benefits of improving your insulin/glucose response).

As someone in their 40s who has slowly moved from 11 to 17 percent body fat, it is far more than a “calorie deficit”. I track all of my calories and macros.

I have come to find (the hard way) that it is all about insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the storage of glycogen to fat.

Intermittent fasting, fewer meals, fewer carbs, lower glycemic level foods means that your Insulin levels rarely crest and maintain above a certain level. Protein helps build muscle which improves metabolism and insulin regulation. Cardio immediately puts you into insulin deficit and raises glucagon which does the opposite of insulin.

At some point our iPhones will be able to monitor our insulin levels, and state whether we are in fat burning or fat aggregation mode and then give post hoc and predictive analytics on body composition.

Great question OP. Hope these responses help.

Err... p1 that’s not true at all. It definitely matters because our body utilized different molecules differently at different times. Glucose tends to always be used first - I.e glycogen storage in our liver and muscle, before we start activating lipolysis (energy from fat) or ketogenic gluconeogenesis (making glucose energy from ketones as a result of low intake of carbs)

like

It’s generally thought that carbs make you retain water (adding to your weight) and have a relatively high glycemic index (which means that insulin breaks them down faster rapidly inserting glucose into the bloodstream). You want foods that breakdown slower so that the energy is used in a more sustainable manner and isn’t stockpiled as fat when the body is through with using them.

likehelpful

Bottom line, not all calories are created equal. Simple sugar and processed/packaged carbs are high on the glycemic index and spike blood sugar, causing metabolism to slow and your body to store fat. If you honestly think 200 calories of brownie and 200 calories of chicken are the same then I have a beach house in Arizona for sale

likefunny

No it’s all about calories in/calories out. People just find it easier to consume less calories eating low carbs because proteins and fat are more filling

like

P1 is definitely not right. Holy shit people I thought consultants were supposed to be smart. Yes protein and fat are more filling, but YES it matters where your calories come from aside from the sensation of satisfying your hunger.

like

@M1 you single? 😏

It’s easier (much easier) to run at a calorie deficit when you’re keto/high fat and low carb. The sensation of hunger is a completely different experience when you’re in keto

I think P1 is right. Compare how full you feel from 100 calories of nuts or beef, compared to a slice of bread. No contest.

Can someone explain why would it matter if my calorie in = calorie out? Let’s say my BMR is 2000 calories a day, and if I eat 2000 calories of pure fat or pure protein, how will that change my weight? Note: I am refraining from using the word health because it’s very subjective.

like

U guys are dunces. If you want to lose weight, eat whatever you want at a deficit. If you want to gain weight, eat at a surplus. If you want to also be healthy you need to eat whole foods, think foods that are have high bioavailability. Now to OP’s question about carbs. Our bodies have 2 main energy sources: glucose and fat. Carbs convert to glucose and our body prefers this energy source. If you’re always eatting carbs you likely wont be able to be in ketosisand burn your extra fat. Protein takes longer to digest which is why you stay fuller for longer.

BCG1, thanks for posting that article, brilliant. The closing of "training and dieting is simple because your body is complex" is the best succinct way of putting it compared my feeble attempts at explaining CICO and its nuances.

So A2, if I end up burning 2000 calories a day, and say i weigh 100 lbs but I eat only 200 calories, either via chicken or brownie; given a 1800 calorie deficit; I will still end up burning fat. So how does it matter? If the argument is that it matters because high carb lowers my BMR and high protein increases my BMR, then the amount of resting calories I burn are different. But as long as the net calorie out in both cases remains same I don’t see why is there a difference.

As a type 1 diabetic, I eat low carb in order to more easily control my blood sugars. Otherwise, I would do it anyway because not all carbs are good carbs. If it’s not processed, go for it!

like

Totally right BCG. I think the idea of keto/low carb is that you’ll stay in that fat burning mode 24/7 though

So take me only eating 1) a candy bar all day, or me only eating 2) zoodles and meat sauce all day. In 1), there will be a spike in my blood sugar (taking me out of fat burning mode) while my body digests/processes the candy bar. Eventually I’ll go into fat burning mode since I haven’t eaten anything else all day and my body needs energy but there will be a block that I’m not in a fat burning state. In 2), since I’m having a low carb meal, the blood sugar response will be more of a slight bump than a spike, and it won’t take me out of a fat burning state. Either way, I’ll get to a fat burning state however the keto/low carb WOE is partially an efficiency argument

A1, read the article posted. The context is important to keep you from being reductive like that.
