Can someone from Deloitte help me to know exactly how many hours I must work in a year to achieve exactly 95 percent utilization? I'm trying to understand the difference between holidays vs. PTO hours

D6 federal is different and therefore calculates utilization differently. Commercial is almost always 45 however I do have a counselee who is on a 40hr/week project. I would make sure utilization was not a factor at year end as they’ve remained staffed and take their PTO but can’t help the project requirements.

I think the studios generally tried to pitch recruits on normal hours (which as already noted is 45). The reality is that on non-studio projects it's hard to be under 55/wk. In fact, I often fill my quota of 45 hours Mo-Thu and take Fri off (I'm always still responsive) - in which case I bill 9h/day across the week. It's easy to work 70h weeks. I think the least I've actually worked when staffed was 55h. So no, no slacking. And even taking full PTO, I'm still above 100% utilization not counting firm initiatives and such.

You are the first person that I have ever met that was hired under the assumption of working ONLY 40 hours. In that case, work your 40 hours, take your PTO, and not hit your utilization. Doesn’t sound like you are shooting for a 1 rating anyways...

like

If someone told you that you could totally control your schedule at Deloitte and only work 40 hours, no more and no less, they were lying to you. I think you’re being unreasonable.

The expectation in my group is that you bill and work 45 each week and that’s the plan. Many pricing models will put 40 hrs/week if it’s over a long period of time but that’s because they know you’ll take PTO and holidays at some point so it all equals out.

like

Op huh? What projects are you working on where you aren’t actually working 45 hours?

like

I disagree with you OP. In fact, I think most people work 50+ hours and cut it down to 45. If you are truly only doing 40 hours, you need to tell people you need 5 hours of more work.

like

Yeah OP I’ve never met a recruiter or interviewer who would suggest this is a 40 hour per week job. It was made very clear to me that it’s a 50+ hour expectation including firm initiatives

You are supposed to bill 45 hours a week.

like

Correct. But we calculate that you are working 45 hours per week, or 9 hours per day. It is calculated as 45 in proposals. And most projects do more than that. So that’s how you hit your utilization.

like

Assuming you are commercial you bill 45 hrs a week but utilization calc is based on 40 hrs/week. 1,976/2080 = 95%.

like

Appreciate the answers guys/girls. Confirmed what I was suspecting. And I have a feeling a lot of folks in the firm say they work 45 without actually working 45 quality hours. The honest people screw themselves.

like

Op what are you talking about? Who is working less than 45 hours?

This is awesome to see that other firms have stupid rules too.

So... 2080 minus the 104. Thank you for confirming. This seems terribly disengenuous of the company. They said last year that we were all so great that we were given another day off at Christmas time. Essentially all that is, is dictating to me when I have to take my time off. I would rather work during Christmas when there are less clients to impress. Really, we only get one personal day besides holidays??

like

If you work 44 weeks at 45 hrs the remaining 8 weeks are PTO and HOL. You should be able to take full holiday and PTO and meet your utilization (unless of course you have bench weeks).

In my late 20's, but I've lived in my current city (nonUS) my whole life. I was really looking forward to moving to NYC and landed a job there earlier this year although I'm still WFH and not in the US yet. A recruiter reached out to me for a new role but it would be in my old city. I'd be pretty fine with both roles themselves. But the NYC one would pay about 140$ TC (not sure about bonus yet, this is a guess), and the non-NYC one would be maybe $25-30 more. Is the $ worth the city sacrifice?
