I keep getting confused about BIPOC because I’ve seen it explained different ways , as either Black + indigenous ppl of color OR Black + indigenous + people of color. I do think the first def, as I’ve seen it explained, is meant to highlight how African-American and Native people didn’t really have a choice in being “American,” and therefore highlights their specific experience of oppression, while other POC through immigration, had more of a choice. (That qualification does seem to erase African immigrants, who are ostensibly Black but might not necessarily ID as African-American.) I say all of this as a mestizx Latinx person who still has no clue how to properly ID as POC or BIPOC.
Oh for sure, I myself was born American, but I acknowledge that the choice my parents made as refugees to immigrate to the US is different than the legacy lived by those who were already here facing settler colonialism or being forcefully brought to the US in shackles.

I’ve been doing some reading about it too. Based on what it I’ve seen I feel like it’s meant to be more specific and empathetic to the experiences/context of Black and Indigenous people (and therefore more inclusive).
