Can someone in IRS tell me about what it’s like? Signing, annual, and retention bonuses? Wlb? Which clients are most interesting?

Bruh. No signing no retention. Annual is good for a first year, and then you barley ever double that. You stop out in low 200s.
But you do that then bring it to big4 and go to WNT. You can make good money easy

I feel you SM1. Being drunk makes me more efficient at work.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

You don’t join the IRS for the money. But if your ok with 130-150k annually and getting out at 430 everyday and no weekends and being totally disconnected from your job (no email checking no phone calls) and doing other things with your life then you may want to consider it. SM1 is right in the fact that your income growth is garbage, but you also get good benefits package and potential pension payout.

Agree with SM2. The IRS pay goes by the general schedule you get hired for and pay step. So of you get hired at the GS14 the highest pay is ~163k in cities like NYC. LCOL would be less. After that you would have to be promoted to GS15 which has 175k as the highest salary. Few people go to the IRS and stay there until retirement. In my experience you either join the IRS a few years early in your career for the exp and then pivot in a niche area in public accounting or much later in your career when money and wealth accumulation does not matter anymore but would like more time without retiring.

Does the IRS hire only tax accountants or do they hire auditors too?

It really depends on your experience and what you can bring to the table. If your going for experienced positions I think some tax knowledge would give you a better edge. A lot of new agents seems to be coming from PA or industry where they were in tax roles. But we also have a couple of new hires with min tax knowledge so anything is possible. If your interested in a position I would apply and at least interview and see where it goes!

Update on my boss-adjacent, hot F Director who made the “tied down” comment/hint/signal/joke - she scheduled a “work dinner” at 6:30pm today for me and her to chat about the strat deck I’ve built as a follow up from yesterday’s meeting. Anyone think she saw me blush lightly at her comment yesterday and she’s making a move, or is this strictly work related?

I need things to keep them from going crazy, but want it to be purposeful also. Any suggestion?

I started at a new firm this year in January. I had a billable goal that was given to me mid year of around 1750 house for the year. I am nowhere near that and definitely will not meet the goal. I had so many non billable hours I was forced to take when I first came in. I worked my ass off in busy season. At my previous firm I never fell short of hours as it was B4. This firm is mid sized and more focused on WLB. My question is how bad do you think this will affect my comp??

Hi tax 🐠,

I have a question for those who prep individual tax returns. My parents claim my grandfather as a dependent on their tax return and due to their low income, receive PTC for the premiums they pay on his insurance (not eligible for medicare). However, would it be advantageous to have him file for his own tax return (he stays with my parents and doesn't have his own proof of residency via bills). If so, can he get PTC if his income is 0?
