It's a self awareness exercise. If you never sit down and think about what went wrong and how you could fix it, you could consciously keep making the same mistakes.
It can turn into a formality for sure, but there's value at a subconscious level, I'd argue.
I think it’s a terrible waste of time and should be had maybe once a month if that. People seem to forget that agile is a methodology, a framework. You don’t have to use all elements and you certainly don’t have to have every single meeting to be successful using it.
It’s intended to improve the process - anything you could be doing better needs to be properly implemented and reviewed periodically.
SC1 - it is just one hour of a sprint/iteration. If your retro’s are unproductive and a waste of time, that is not a function of the methodology - that’s on your scrummaster. I agree that not every meeting is necessary, but retros help refocus the team and hopefully improve the process.
Hopefully.
Op- I feel ya and think it’s bullshit too.
It is also a way to let people vent out.

It’s a stinking pile of BS when a bunch of consultants + “consulting firm developers” do this in the name of overcharging the client for what could have been a simple waterfall activity. However, in software and application development firms all these retrospective sessions are very useful to truly improve the product and management experience.
