Can someone please help me on how I can negotiate a higher salary, when a large component of my total compensation is linked to variable pay. I have cleared the final rounds of interview with a company, where the variable component is almost negligible and they're only willing to give a raise over my fixed compensation. PS The variable pay last year at my current firm was impacted due to onset of covid. :(

Just talk in terms of TC. Expected variable pay is lower, so expected base salary should be higher. Also look at other factors like insurance, PTO, 401k match, etc. Quantify it and highlight where the new company needs to increase your base to offset where they come up short. Also, don't forget you're maybe leaving an unpaid (but partially earned) bonus on the table when you quit. Your signing bonus should be high enough to offset that "forfeited income".

Thank you that's very helpful.

OP, I’m confused about what is known to you and potential new firm. Have you shared your current comp with new firm? What about your target TC or base with the new firm?

Eh. Sharing your current comp+structure in general is a no-no. The new firm can now offer you slightly more than current comp, which is what it sounds like they’re doing. You can always ask for more, but up to you to walk away if they don’t meet or accept as is.

Been growing my hair out over the last year (male). Newly promoted SM, and will start traveling for on-site proposals and client workshops soon with older senior partners. Does it look bad if I have a man bun? I’ve worked with some - but not all - of these clients in the past and don’t think the ones I know would care, but fear judgment from the partners. I’ve been able to keep it pretty out of sight on videoconference calls
