Faced this weird behaviour from Optum recently. Gave interview for Data Scientist position. HR said feedback is positive. Asked for documents. It's been month now since I have shared the documents. I have no update on the offer. Today I called HR, she called me back saying the position is on hold due to recalibration in team, She has shared interview feedbacks to other teams and will get back to me in couple of days. I am clueless now. My last working day is approaching (In a month). Any Help??

From my experience it really depends on the context. At some companies, you can continue being an individual contributor and still advance and become fairly senior. You just become an expert in your field. At other companies, managing people is a built-in part of climbing the ranks. My experience has been mostly with the latter and I've tried to spend time (unfortunately extra time outside work or on top of my official responsibilities) reading up on how to actually manage people. That is a different skill set than the core work most of us do, and most companies don't dedicate enough professional development to training new managers. Overall my transition from individual contributor to manager role took 5-6 years post-college.
Even my company offers growth both as individual contributor and manager. However, it seems like I can only get a raise by getting promoted, being promoted means to become a manager. There is only two more level to promote me if I were choose to continue as an individual contributor. But many more levels of manager ahead. Do you see this happen in your experience?
Great question, I'm curious about this too!
