Can someone tell me more about Infection Control Nursing? How hard is it to get your first job? Do you have to have the apic certification before first job? From my understanding, you just walk around to the hospital units, get the rates of each disease and report them to the dir., like a consultant, m-f, and I need 2 years of infection control nurse experience to start studying for CIC, then I could become an Infection Preventionist. Is this correct? Thanks!

Depending on where you are located your state might have a program where you can be certified. I live in NJ and last year they held a big training for nurses who wanted to be certified in Infection Control. Also due to the fact that every LTC in NJ had to have a IP. Now that I am certified I am interested in taking the CIC certification test. I started in August and joined APIC a few months ago. They have a training course that allows you to study all that is needed to know for the test. You have a year with the course so you can take your time and really understand the information.
I work in a Subacute Rehab/LTC and it is a very demanding job. You work hand in hand with all departments to insure all infection control protocols are being followed. It can be stressful if you have co workers who could not care less and do as they please. I keep track of the vaccinations in my building, infection rates, I do inservices to the facility, daily audits on PPE don and doff , handwashing. I hold vaccination clinics. Its a lot.

I understand… currently I’m in concierge urgent care in NYC so I would be making a jump to a LTC or hospital, probably in Long Island. I just want to be prepared in understanding how I can make that jump into that position. Before I start applying and gettinv a million rejections because I don’t have the certification. I feel like I’m not seeing a lot of IF positions that have no experience… I’m seeing a lot of “must have experience”, “cic preferred”, “min 2 years experience.” Some place has to take me to begin from knowing nothing. That’s why I’m thinking hopefully the apic will help me out a little bit to begin.

Is anyone at a job they really, truly enjoy that also pays competitively (and has good benefits)? In my experience, I haven’t found anything that satisfies both. Either I love the job and I’m grossly underpaid or the job is totally mediocre but the money is great. Is it really possible to have it all or do I need to lower my standards? Maybe it’s just the way this industry is?

My family keeps recommending medical sales, my bank account recommends finishing the degree that cost me an arm and a leg, and my heart is conflicted in so many areas of interest - PT, Psych, sales, etc. I am currently working as a patient care technician but do not see this as my end goal.
