I work in Life Sciences/Pharma, and it's a big deal for us. All C-suite executives have one and most SVPs will, too. Often it's a consultant or former consultant in that role, actually.
Typically, Pharma executives are scientists or doctors, so the CoS is usually an MBA who provides the business acumen necessary to lead a large organization. Management, finance, marketing, etc. The CoS is the right hand of the executive and speaks with their full authority.
Pay is VERY good. One of my friends left a Life Sciences consulting firm to be the CoS to the CEO of a very small Pharma company, and she doubled her cash salary and got stock options on top of it.
Even I have seen these folks are coming from consulting only.

Sounds like either head of HR, a COO, or the CEO’s right-hand
Agree with SL1. We have them at my current company. Just be careful that it isn’t more a glorified EA. I saw that happen to someone as BAH.
I am a Chief of Staff now, and it varies from company to company but generally you are a super generalist who is the operationalizing the CEO’s vision through leading strategic initiatives and leading one-off things that don’t fall into another executive’s wheel house... the role is part individual contributor / part program manager; you also need to balance good cop and bad cop as one person; it’s a fun but challenging role in my experience.... if you are considering it make sure you will have a great relationship with the executive you are working for
Why would a consulting firm requires Chief of Staff when they hire best people from B school.
