Jesus Christ this happens every year chill out
You shouldn’t feel too bad about the govies (my wife is one). They ALWAYS get retroactively paid for their furloughed time. It’s not ideal, but it is essentially a shitty paid vacation where you get your paycheck several weeks late. And as someone who consulted with the government the last time this happened, I can tell you the end result is a lot of paid overtime for the government employees because their jobs don’t just simply stop... that work piles up and has to be cleared once the lights are turned back on.
I more bummed by the medical research that will be trashed at NIH because the labs are closed, the SSA payments that may not go out on time, etc..
Just to correct it doesn't happen every year and there are gov employees that are def affected so it might not be a big deal to you but to some others it is.
And for the record: C1’s statements betray a complete lack of understanding of “essential employees"
No, the Supreme Court can’t mandate funding
This doesn’t happen every year. SCOTUS can’t do shit, Congress has the purse strings.
It’s really not a big deal
Ey1 - essential services aren’t on furlough. So anyone on furlough is non-essential. Basically they should be laid off since the gov is already imflated
C1 you have no idea what non essential means. The entire IT, finance, HR, procurement and other support functions stop. Sure that may be okay for a few days, but can you imagine companies functioning without the back office?
Nope. There’s a reason why government is separated into 3 branches. Supreme Court falls under the judicial branch and budget falls under the purview of executive and legislative. So nothing they can do unless someone breaks the law in the budgeting process. Even then all they can do is prosecute and pass judgement.
Oh wait until you hear the best part. They actually get back pay for the time they missed when the government resumes operating. It’s up to Congress but we all know how much spine those folks have.
Yeah, it's a huge waste of time and money, but not really a sky is falling kinda deal. Essentially, just a symptom if poor leadership... Which isn't so unusual in Trump's America... Not say it wasn't unusual prior to trump... Euugh
If any group of government employees that should not be paid its the total worthless pieces of shit in both the house and senate
SCOTUS has already started legislating from the bench, so why not grab the purse strings as well 🙄
D2 - Gov can barely function with the back office. Cuts need to be made
C1, how do you know that? You know what keeps people from fraudulently starting a student loan application in your name and then using that to file a tax return in your name? You know what keeps agencies from spending more budget than they have? Unless you have worked in the government or consulted to the government, you have little knowledge of how it really works. I agree there are inefficiencies, but just make cuts blindly is how we make the problem worse
