Can we all just collectively as a society come to a consensus on whether to turn video on for zoom calls? I’m honestly fine either way, but the suspense and anxiety every time I join a new call is killing me.

I like it. Clients get to follow along as I become increasingly disheveled as we approach signing/closing (which actually helps how I market myself, which is that if you hire me you actually get me and aren’t going to immediately be handed off to a senior associate). That said, I’m never going to be the first to turn my camera on.

This truly makes me feel better about my habit of intentionally going on camera to show increasingly disheveled states.
Once, to really prove a point, I added grey eyeshadow under my eyes to emphasize the bags.

No. Perks of WFH is ability to be comfortable in my element. If in the office I’ll turn it on

like

I do not because I think best when walking around. I start talking like an idiot when I'm sitting down.

To be clear, I’m not saying we should all turn our cameras on, just saying let’s make up our mind already

1st year?

4th. Just socially anxious and hate the back and forth of waiting to see whether anyone else will turn their camera on and thus force everyone else to do so.

I usually have it off for internal calls unless there’s a partner on the call who likes to turn video on, then I turn it on. Also I prep to have it on for external calls (unless they’re outside normal business hours), but if others have off then I will just copy and turn leave mine off too. Very annoying when I’ve groomed myself expecting video on but everyone has off though.

I do not unless meeting with an external party. I use the excuse that video slows my computer delays the feed. I just don’t say anything when I’m WFH and hope no one notices.

My “happy medium” was uploading my firm photo as my zoom pic so everyone can appreciate my photoshopped beauty and have a face to the name as I say genius things. Mostly I just won’t turn it on and usually even if a few people turn on a fair amount don’t so it’s fine. When I’m a main person talking and the majority of peeps have it on sometimes I’ll cave but I feel like you can figure out the expectation in the first couple of deal calls so it’s not that much of a surprise.

Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?

The short: Would anyone be up for starting regular virtual co-working sessions? I’m thinking 2-3 rounds of [5 mins to set intentions : 45 mins of work : 10 min break]. The long: One technique I’ve found to stay focused is “body doubling,” i.e., having another person present while you’re working. I’ve had some success replicating this over Zoom/Google Meet. Everyone works on their own thing and stays muted during work blocks, but videos stay on. It reminds me of studying in the library vs at home

Someone on LinkedIn expressed disappointment about the lack of diversity from the big law firms in TX that were posting pics of their summer associates. A managing partner commented that he thought the post might be about a pic he posted (12/14 SAs were white). He tried to defend this by saying that they had LGBT and socioeconomic diversity. The fact that he recognized that his pic might be part of the problem says it all. Law firms need to do better. Sorry, I just wanted to rant.

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
