Can we debate why Canadian healthcare is leaps and bound better than the US broken health care system?

Y’all thought covid and BLM were contentious? Don’t even get these incompetent 🐠 started on the great American healthcare.

“Hah. Y’all pay MORE tax for socialized healthcare. We pay LESS tax you suckers. Instead we pay thousands to insurance companies for access to basic health services. Then we use our life savings to pay off the bills for major health problems when we’re in our older years. But we still pay LESS tax.”

A couple of thoughts: we need something in the us for basic stuff: seeing some one for an annual check up, getting people on affordable insulin/heart meds, etc and making sure that there’s some protection against catastrophic issues. but the real trouble is you’re asking those that have had pretty much instant access to the best docs and procedures to give that up so others that have never had any access can have equal access and that’s not going to be supported. In Canada you have people traveling to the us to see specialists who can afford it rather than wait in months long triage lines. As you’ll never be able to force docs to see anyone or accept Medicare, you’ll see higher taxes and increased private spending with decreased access if you try to do equal for all

Its not tho

There is no drug rationing in Canada. The healthcare system is very good. We have some excellent hospitals that are on par with the best in the world and probably some that are not like any other country so I wouldn’t pick one data point and hold that as an example - it’s a poor way to make an argument. Overall outcomes, I think Canada wins, unless you happen to be wealthy or have a high paying job with good insurance (a bias many in this forum probably have). As has been pointed out, overall the population is healthier, lives longer, and is less sick as we can get healthcare more easily. Preventative medicine is often the best medicine but when it’s so expensive you create a system where people don’t get help until it’s too late.

The dweebs are gonna respond to you with “but you have to wait so long to see a doctor!” but the wait in the US is literally forever if you don’t have insurance or can’t afford your treatment.

Most people on this app get to experience what’s great about the US, but if you’re lower or middle class, life is significantly less dreadful in every other developed country.

Im in canada, it’s good here :)

Canadians generally don't eat junk food like we do here. They exercise and and take care of their bodies. Have you seen some of our citizens? They're nearly as wide as they are tall. We have this culture that we shouldn't body shame and love our bodies but what better way to love and respect your body than feeding it proper nutrition and exercising and trying to live a healthy lifestyle.

But but Sarah Palin says they have death panels!

This second article is literally citing the viewpoint of the author of the first article (which was an opinion article, btw). Perhaps this is the definition of a news echo chamber?

Healthcare or access to healthcare? Because I feel like if you have the right money/connections you can get the best care in the world in the US

I know. That’s why they come here for a lot of surgery

The rich ones do.
We have the best healthcare system in the world for rich people / those who can afford to be price gouged. Overall, the system is at best mediocre, even though spending is high. More funding won't fix things. Reforms to drive consumer bargaining power and competition are necessary.

It might be “better” but Canadian also pay a ton more in taxes...even if you don’t use the healthcare

D3 this made me laugh out loud thank you so much

I’ve heard rumors of death panels, but that’s not that far removed from people driving to hospitals themselves instead of in ambulances to save costs 🤷‍♀️ There’s just a bit too much private interest in the U.S. system in which a majority used to be supported by charity that’s long gone now

like

I agree, but as it stands now, we’re in a weird in between state where it’s all a bit messed up! Prior to ACA, a majority of Americans wanted pre-existing conditions covered and the ability to transfer insurance across state lines. We’re still reliant on our companies to help negotiate with insurance companies. There should be a solution without having to choose false dichotomies

UK “free” healthcare means 45 percent income tax on anything over 70k in earnings. 20 percent sales tax and gas is $8+ a gallon.

I’m Canadian and I’d venture to guess at least 95% of Canadians firmly agree our health care is better than what folks have in the US. I’d also guess at least 95% of us would NEVER give up what we have in terms of health care for the US system.

Lies, damn lies, and statistics! But tbh the Canadian healthcare workers aren’t magically better: they treat a much healthier population who all have insurance. Simple concept

Can we debate why Canada’s immigration system is leap and bounds better than the us?

Wait to get treatment is also long

It’s also a smaller (Population wise) country with less problems that come with crowded and deprived population centers that monolithically reward Democrat machine politicians that ignore them.

Most of us live in cities up here too EY. Don’t believe what you see about us all wearing plaid and living in log cabins.

Yeah the taxes are crazy for sure

This is such a misconception. Canadian taxes are literally the same rates as places like New York. Seriously, go do a check online for your own salary and see what the difference is. NY vs Florida will be a bigger difference than NY vs Ontario

We could, but we would have to have it in the right Bowl
