EY1- as “business expenses”?
I’m guessing yes; however, TurboTax says I’m ineligible, once I enter all the information (W2 and 1098-T). Thanks in advance folks!
It’s complicated... some level of risk if you get audited. https://www.forbes.com/sites/mattsymonds/2014/04/11/the-mba-and-the-taxman-claim-or-not-claim/
Unless it’s for your current job, no
Yes as long as you don’t change jobs
If you are asking if tuition is tax deductible for part time MBA? Yes it is and can be claimed as long as you are a full time student. If you are taking a normal course load, even for part time, you will qualify.
There are some pretty strict requirements about how you qualify, just google it. But be aware that you will have increased scrutiny for audit. If you do it do it for 2017 tax year tho as it will go away under the new tax plan
Thanks guys. EY1- yes, current job— Part time mba.
I just finished my part time MBA with current job. Deducted my tuition every year as business expenses. Got audited and provided documentations, didn’t hear from IRS that I can’t do that.
Was anyone here successful in appealing an audit decision on this?
Yeah employer business expenses. You can read the link above. It does go away starting 2018 though ( perfect time for me to finish my MBA 😝)
I did it for my MA. I had actually gotten pinged by the IRS for unreported income from a side gig (they said I owed like $600), so I filed an amended return that deducted my tuition and ended up getting an addition $4k from the IRS. Never had a question back from them on why I turned it around as I did
