Can we talk a being called articulate?

I’m an immigrant and my English is not very smooth and articulate, but it’s definitely ok. It’s my second language - most people don’t know that, and I just have to sit with the (valid) perception that I’m not very articulate, and I’ve made peace with that. However, I enjoy and admire people who are articulate and well spoken - I just can’t seem to get to that level. I read, I write, I try. I just think it’s too late. At the same time, I hear a lot of minorities being tired/offended of being called “articulate.” And I really understand why. But from my perspective the “really articulate” minorities are more articulate than the average educated white person too. I believe they take it personally, like, “oh you think i should be speaking like I’m from [somewhere underprivileged]?” But I don’t think that’s what most mean. I think they mean “you are more articulate than the average person period and it’s a delight to speak to you.” I say to everyone (white, minority..) who’s articulate that they speak so well. I’m so envious and wish I was them. To illustrate this (screengrab), I have a very articulate friend who is white. It is such a delight to hear him. And his white friends are all telling him how articulate he is. I totally get your experiences and they are valid. I believe there’s abuse sometimes. But I wonder if you realize that white people are being called “articulate” too. Anyway, I stopped telling minorities like myself they’re articulate because I listen to their concerns. I just say it to white people. I just wanted to bring another perspective - the one of an envious minority of articulate people. Would love to hear your experiences/perspectives and always appreciate being enlightened. Thank you.

Happy to contribute my perspective! Again, I think it’s worth interrogating you’re intention and then what the words you use truly mean. Don’t let fear dictate what you’re saying. Just ask yourself what you really want to communicate. To me this falls in the camp of “well-spoken” which I try to forego. What is meant by “well”? Compared to what? Are you trying to say they “have a way with words”? In context, that has a slightly better connotation. But don’t beat yourself up! It’s not about getting “it” right. It’s about constantly trying to do the right thing(s).

Articulate doesn't mean perfect, it refers to the ability to express an idea. So if you can get your idea across well with an accent or without perfect grammar by sign or by song, it doesn't matter to me; I will still find you to be articulate.

At what stage of life/age did you truly feel financially “free”? I define this as being able to buy whatever you want within reason (no private island, etc). Feels like it’s impossible to get there.

Wondering about band 7 to band 8 promotion and what criteria you need to meet. Is there a site that outlines requirements? Or is it mostly based on project work experience and the argument you make for that promotion? Also, I heard promotion cycles are now only every 6 months. Does anyone know what months those are?
