Long story alert! But good ending! Unfortunately, I was in this situation my first year of teaching. I barely felt like I knew what I was doing, I was hired in only 2 days before the start of school, and my team was mainly comprised of teachers with a year or less experience teaching. We did everything to help each other through, but our admin was the real problem. I had a student (1st grade) that was very aggressive, particularly towards one of my SpEd kids that didn't know what was happening. Our "specialist" that would observe him was really more observing me and talking over me while I taught my class. After many positive reinforcement strategies crumbled I had lost my patience and eventually nipped his actions in the butt by giving him a total of 10 times to leave his space without permission before I would call the office to have him removed. We went from 74 in a day down to 12 in just 3 days. Call me an old school type...but I believe in consequences. I felt like I finally had control over my class, but was being given conflicting information from the specialist (pay attention to the behaviors) and my admin (teach everything and do it on time with your grade's schedule down to the minute...he would actually patrol the hallway to check up on us). So my admin brought in a "mentor teacher." She was horrible. She came in and said she would handle everything but our newly implemented social emotional curriculum which she didn't know anything about as a retired teacher. She yelled at me in the middle of a lesson she was teaching my class for taking notes and jotting down questions I thought of on my computer saying it was no wonder my class had behavioral issues. A week later I became ill and had to miss a few days of work and she covered my class since she was already there. When I came back. She had changed my calendar setup, room decorations, and hung up posters that covered things that weren't included in our standards. She also went to our PLC meeting and instead of filling me in on discussion, she told me nothing important happened and yelled at my team for being young and incompetent. I asked her about an idea I was considering for reading and showed her some exit tickets for phonics I was working on (as part of our school improvement plan). In front of my class, she yelled at me again and said that she could just go if I wasn't going to respect her. She threw my papers at me and stomped around the room tearing things down. I told her that she could go ahead and leave. It felt so good to take all of her stuff off the walls. That moment and the one when I found out I was being transferred to my current school were the two best from that year.

In reading these posts I can certainly relate. I have been teaching over 30 years and have been the rep called in to help and have also been the recipient of ridiculous issues like ones discussed here. I agree with take the high road. I m sorry your union is-not supportive. I asked s rep to go with me to an evaluation conference once. She did. But my concerns were not on her own personal ambitious agenda. I eventually transferred to another building in the same district and it s been a breath of fresh air I ve been in the district 33 years and in my “new “ building for five years. Find a new outlet. Be visible in your building for doing good things. Cultivate interests away from school in the weekends. This too will pass.

A grievance is something you file specifically when the District (usually in the form of an administrator) is doing something that violates your contract. That doesn't apply to other teachers, generally. Your HR department should have procedures for complaints against co-workers, and State and Federal laws governing workplace harassment laws would also apply here. You should definitely include your Union rep in the process so they can make sure the proper procedures are followed by the District to address the situation.

That’s what I thought as well. I don’t know anything about grievances really. Thank you for explaining

This is a human issue. It’s high school all over again. It’s a lack of communication and heart. I always tell my children, “I cannot bend the world around you to make you comfortable, but I can teach you how to react.” How many years were you alive before you met these people? You did just fine, right? Tell yourself “Next” and go on.

Ughhhhhhhhh teacher bullies are the worst!!!!! My advice - kill them with kindness, sarcasm when they’re being outrageous, and being the absolute best teacher you can be.

It’s also common for an administrator to bully a teacher. Unfortunately, most times it’s a fine line and difficult to prove.

I felt like that for five years! Thankfully, that admin has moved on and we have a new one.

I am the only black teacher at my school in Orange County Ca. The issue I have is that I feel like I am a ghost walking the hallways. No one speaks not even my principal and especially my assistant principals. It is humiliating because I know I am only being tolerated there. I am a good teacher but I feel like my voice is silenced. I do not want to cause waves by saying something but it is so lonely at work. My department values the input I do give from my 20 years of teaching experience.

Unacceptable But I know it’s happening. Move to Bay Area. I am only white teacher at my special education school. I love the diversity and love. We learn so much from each other. Thanks for your many years of service to our children. I had to leave my home in the Midwest because of small minds. I wasn’t the target but it was everywhere. I thought OC had improved. I bet if you asked your co workers, half would not even be aware of their biases. We need more training and conversation about what it looks like. Good luck and God Bless

I am being suspended without pay next week because I have just been accused of this exact thing. On my very first day back we had a pd over a certain website, in a private conversation with a co -worker I said, want to guess how many times we hear this particular word today? I was reported . I was accused of bullying and was told if I fought it the superintendent would go after my license. I was not trying to be unkind. I was simply joking about a lengthy pd. I am now labeled a bully. And yes the union said just take the punishment, because once the superintendent decides you are a bully you are done for. I have been devastated for days, can’t sleep. Be sure you are actually being bullied before you destroy someone’s life.

Ohio, I am terribly sorry this has happened to you. It has been a rough few weeks for me. Yes this coworker has been bullying me and a few others. I have documentation from him through emails and text messages. The last straw was pulled and I took it to admin. He will not keep bullying me.

It hasn't happened to me personally, but I've seen it happen and yes...contact your union rep.

Absolutely speak to your principal and union rep in your school. This is unacceptable behavior and definitely not professional at all, coming from a supposedly colleague.

I was bullied by a former colleague who used to be someone I worked with closely. One year she had a group of particularly difficult parents who did not care for her style of teaching. Friends of their children spoke well of me, so they wanted to switch teachers. They were not allowed and our administration and counselors defended her. Unfortunately, she made the incorrect assumption that somehow I was at the root of the problem. I was initially hurt, but the years following were outrageous. She did everything she could to tarnish my reputation. She refused to collaborate during pd events. She even wrote terrible emails which she copied to other teachers. That was the final straw. I told my building principal that if the situation was not handled I would go to HR. She left that year and has not taught since. The really sad part.. I was an ally. She let one group of difficult parents nearly destroy both of us.

Things have been so much better. Never had a problem with anyone else.

I was in that situation a few years ago. She also bullied another teacher who left. I had too many years in to leave. She even got a couple cronies to join in. She was saying disparaging things to students, parents and around town. I have ALWAYS been ranked as an accomplished teacher. I had been very successful in my previous school and won several awards in my first few years at this school. I had to fight to get my reputation back. The union said I could not file a grievance on another union member and my principal said to just stay in my classroom and do what I do best…teach students. Time passes, I eventually started having fun again, the students trust me. She is still there bullying other teachers and nothing is done.

It’s just so deeply disappointing to hear. I’m sorry you had to go through that. You must have felt so alone….you didn’t deserve that! (Hug)

I was bullied by another teacher. She had conspired with two other teachers to make my life hell. One of the other teachers told me that she felt threatened by me. When she started spreading rumors about me, I went to the principal and the tides turned. She was forced to transfer.

I have been called a "mean girl" and a "bully" at work. I guess I was supposed to be bothered by it, but I can honestly say I was not (at least not for the mean girl comment). It was years ago and it was by someone about me and my partner. We have very strong work ethics and the teacher that said this had been pushing her responsibilities off on others and could "opt" out of teaching for the day if she was having a bad day (ie. leave a note on her door that her class was cancelled and go back to your homeroom. She would not get her students if there was a sub from another teacher and her students would go where the sub was because they knew she wouldn't look for them. We informed the principal, and the other teacher said we were mean-girls to her. The bully comment was the first week of school because (without going into too much detail....) someone had not been forthcoming for a few years regarding quite a bit of paperwork and it resulted in having a LOT of someone else's work pushed off on several other teachers (including me). I wasn't having it. I spoke up about it and stood my ground that I was not going to be pushed over, as was subsequently called a bully. I hope that when folks are saying "bully" that we are not mistaking that with assertive and firm. Bullying is wrong on every level and it's not fair to misrepresent someone as such if you just don't agree with them.

Yes, a teacher can file a grievance against another teacher. At least in LAUSD.

Yes u can but I suggest to pray and leave it I. God’s hands

I just left a district where I was bullied to various degrees for 5 years. At one point, my principal even looked at me and said, “there was probably something I could have done about it, but, hehe” and shrugged it off. I’m so glad to be away from that toxicity.

Any strong thoughts/opinion about nontenured teachers opting out of joining the union their first 2-3 years? Good idea? Bad idea? It’s good to have community and solidarity, but it’s a also lot of money to some young adults... and if they’re non-renewed, there’s really nothing the union can do. My student teacher asked me and I figured I’d get the opinions of those who have experience on either side. Thanks!
