Can you be a socialist/antifascist and a work in biglaw?

I am a biglaw associate, currently working in a practice area where I feel my work benefits society as a whole and not mainly our clients at the expense of others.

I am also a socialist and care deeply about issues like systemic racism, climate change and the huge differences in income and wealth in this country. People with an income like me and partners in particular should be taxed way more.
Any other biglaw folks who feel the same?

My secretary and I ran an accidental experiment at the BigLaw firm. We took up a floor-wide collection for a holiday gift for our floor’s cleaning lady, who was a very sweet, hard-working immigrant grandma with some tragedy in her past. All the biggest givers were associates (some giving hundreds, most giving $50 or so) and secretaries. Very few of the partners contributed, and when they did, it was between $5 and $20. When my secretary stopped by a rainmaker’s office to ask if he wanted to contribute, his response was, “Why would I want to do that?” Dude makes multiple millions a year and lives in a mansion on Lake Michigan. Apparently the cult of the “just and right” unfettered free market is a very compelling idea when the gods of supply-and-demand have seen fit to smile upon you.

Some studies have shown that the poor are more charitable than the rich as a percentage of their income/wealth. It seems that empathy and sympathy for the poor often diminishes as one’s wealth increase. Of course many people buck that trend and maintain or increase their compassion and generosity. But I’m not shocked to see it in the context of an “eat what you kill” law firm where there’s a lot of zero-sum game mentality (e.g., higher pay for staff = lower profits for shareholders).

(Side note: another Eastern European grandma on the night cleaning crew told me she works 3 jobs and was probably just as tired as us associates, for astronomically lower pay).

Or, the millionaires are tired of working for free from July to December each year and figure good ol’ Uncle Sam can redistribute the millions already taken from their salaries? Just a thought.

Why don’t you just send an extra check or two to the IRS every year? Nothing stopping you from taxing yourself without imposing that on others.

I take pride in being a hnw TE planner and saving ultra wealthy millions in taxes. Most of them do TONS of charitable giving, producing much better results than our idiot government (both sides of it) recklessly spending more and more every year and Loki for to tax increases as a solution every time they need more.

I have 200k in loans and take home about half my salary - I’m a liberal but no I don’t think I should be taxed any more than I currently am

This. I would love if people like our clients paid more in tax.

Respectfully, are you sure you know what “socialist” means? Being liberal or even very liberal doesn’t mean you’re a socialist.

Exactly right. Which is why those us on the left need to be better on how we discuss this stuff.

like

I should be taxed less, way less. Only the super wealthy ($100m+ net worth) should be taxed. And they should be taxed on all gains every year. Normal upper middle class people like us are the worst off tax-wise.

What biglaw practice area benefits society as a whole and not just the client?

IMO it’s hard for someone to self label as a “socialist” while working biglaw. Biglaw reps the largest companies in the world, who’s only MO is to maximize profits. Whether or not you directly work on those matters, you nonetheless are part of that operation. They consistently defend these companies on antitrust, FCPA, mass tort, class actions, etc. Again, just my opinion.

You will hear crickets. Its lonely out there for leftist lawyers like us. Not in Big Law but know plenty of big lawyers and all are either republican or Hillary Clinton type Dems.

I think you forgot the “champagne” in front of “socialist” when describing yourself.

like

I think increasing taxes on people like us are kind of missing the point- like any way you cut it, we are the petite bourgeois, we do not own the means to capital, and the real issue is the mega-wealthy. In fact, I think the conflation between an associate who makes $200k or even a partner who makes $1M a year completely and the true mega-wealthy shows how little people understand the wealth gap in America

I just read that Kelly Clarkson (who I presume few of us remember/care about) disclosed during her divorce proceeding that she earns approx. $1.8 million/month. Our firm also represents a handful of clients (albeit outliers) who earn tens of millions each month. The point being that I completely agree -- most of the population has no clue how great the wealth disparity truly is.

I don’t think you can uphold your oath. You should be disbarred for being openly socialist and actually a fascists, because those two things are almost always intertwined. You should really educate yourself on what these things actually are.

Well, no one can be both a socialist and a so-called antifascist at the same time, because socialism is way too close to fascism. I honestly don’t remember the last time I read something this ridiculous.

What is the bonus structure at your law firm? Associate hour requirement at my firm is 1850, for every hour over that you get your billable rate (i.e. if your rate is $200/hr you get $200 for each hour over 1850). To me this seems like its just overtime pay. Is this typical?
