Can you expense mileage when you take public transportation (costs the same as commuting to office) to client’s site?

To rephrase the question, can you expense mileage that you didn’t actually incur? Or to rephrase once more, can you commit expense fraud? Well you can, I guess. But maybe shouldn’t?

likefunny

Yeah why stop there? Why not expense the amount of a cab to the client?

likefunny

The mileage reimbursement is meant to compensate you for the additional gas and additional wear and tear you put on your car by driving the extra distance to the client. If you take public transportation to the office normally and take it to the client, then you aren’t incurring the additional gas and wear and tear expenses on your car. Therefore, it is not appropriate to expense that. However, if your normal commute to the office is $x for public transportation and the cost to commute to the client is $x + $y, then you can expense the $y amount.

Sometimes found myself in the extra public transpo cost described by Senior Manager 1. But always nice to get the extra clarifications. Thanks guys

What is wrong with people? You can’t expense more than your actual expenses unless you want to commit fraud. It’s a reimbursement, not a revenue stream

like

Why wouldn’t you just charge the cost of public transportation?

You can only expense the difference between your normal commute to the office and the additional cost to the client site. As an example, I used to drive 5 miles to the office. My client was 15 miles away. 15-5= 10 miles expensed.

Not so much a meme, but I was parked behind this car. I wonder if this guy doesnt really own a business and thinks a personalized plate with "WRTEOFF" and "Section 179" written in the dirt makes this Jeep Grand Cherokee an "Ordinary and Necessary Business Expense"

Need counsel: Left advertising to go client side last year. Working at a huge company isn’t for me long-term but the money is great, I have more balance and actually raised my kids this year. I have the opportunity to be a c-suite leader at a very small agency on the rise. Super confused. Money will be less, long-term opportunity will be more. Also thinking about having another kid soonish.

Hey Fam. Spouse & I have been planning to start trying to conceive this year & specifically this month (27 and 28). Has anyone else felt very ready to start a family but when it’s time to start trying, start second guessing if you’re ready and thinking about all of the pros and cons. Should we wait another year? What if we have trouble getting pregnant and kick ourselves for waiting? Will people see us more as just parents and not as much for our successful careers we work so hard for?

My (white) manager consistently gives me feedback that I’m “very literal” when doing assignments. She asks for something, I do what her directions say, and she tells me “oh you took that very literally. You’re very literal.” Obviously consulting is subjective and we’ve all had managers give vague directions leading to multiple iterations of work, but at what point do I push back? I’ve also noticed her say this about several black colleagues including clients and the senior mgr on the project.

Partners (at Deloitte at least), are you all trained to refer to everyone as “good people” when speaking to them? How bad does it look to prospective employers to change jobs every 3 years? I've done this since college (12 years ago) and have tripled my salary as a result. Granted, I've switched between the same two companies each time, getting a big pay bump in the process. Now, the other company is looking at bringing me back again (3rd time). The pay bump won't be as big, but much better WLB, less travel, and I'll be able to do what I love. Opinions on this?
