Sorry to hear you and your parent are going through this. If your parent has been diagnosed with severe depression, they are per se within the “serious health condition” and you should be able to qualify under FMLA so long as you can provide medical certification (diagnosis and course of treatment). However, depending on the course of treatment schedule, your supervisor/HR may require you to take FMLA leave intermittently (i.e., one day a week vs an extended block of time). If no diagnosis of severe depression, mental health conditions are covered so long as they require overnight hospitalization and/or continuing treatment under the care of a healthcare provider (again, you would need to provide such treatment plan). I would reach out to HR/your supervisor anyway. If you have a good HR team/relationship with your supervisor, they have the power to bend what qualifies under FMLA.
