Can you have good WLB while working in a small (<10 attorneys) legal department? I’ve only ever worked at large companies with large legal departments. I’m worried taking vacations would be hard at a very small company since there are fewer people to cover for you.

I’m sure there are several factors that would depend on, like company size. I’m on a team of 2 and it’s a great WLB

like

Team of 3 - same.

I’m sole in house counsel at my company and have incredible WLB

like

My team has 5 - GC, senior counsel, me, and 2 paras/assistants. WLB is solid for everyone but the GC - weekend work is self-inflected, occasional late-ish, but not crazy late nights (7 is my latest and based on the shared drive, latest for the rest of the team and usually last emails are sent around 6). We’ve been able to triage work over vacations without too much difficulty. Mainly the other counsel and I cover for each other, with the GC pitching in on things over my level or that I don’t have time for.

like

Your company may just have to hire outside counsel to cover when in-house isn’t around. But it may not be necessary because vacations are 2 weeks max. There are very few matters that need immediate attention. If they do, there is always outside counsel.

Stuck working with a client I cannot stand to the point that I've seriously considered looking for a new job. The work isn't that bad but the client is rude, patronizing, and often straight-up problematic. No one does anything about it since he takes up a ton of space and projects a lot of confidence. Just needed to vent I guess but any advice is definitely appreciated.

Hello!
I was wondering what kind of contractual or other barriers I might face if I apply for one of the big 4 while working on a project with them in my current company.
I am not too involved in the project but I was in a few meetings and went on a field trip with them as well.
The position that I am applying for is in a different team and city.
Will this considered “poaching” if the consulting firm hires me? Would they need to talk to my current employer?

In play for a few roles & wanted your take on WLB, career satisfaction, etc. Other than a mentor I'm connecting with, my only other insight is working w/ client deal counsel.

My goal has always been in-house, but hear M&A in-house can be a similar grind to firms. WLB isn't the only factor, but don't think I'm crazy to look for reasonable balance when giving up salary.

I’m starting to look for a new role in the Investment Management space in Boston. I’m currently grossly underpaid and I’m trying to figure out what my salary should look like. I’ve checked the recruiter salary guides but they average everything out so the projections seem pretty low. I have 8 years of experience between being in house and with a third party service provider. No law firm experience. Any help on what I could expect for a salary is appreciated.

I’m considering an AGC position at a small but growing startup. The company is based in NY but everyone is working remotely. I would be 1 of 2 attorneys. Any thoughts on what I might expect as a comp offer and what’s fair? I’ve been in-house in a Director level position for 2 years, and I have 7 total years of experience as an attorney, mostly doing litigation prior to moving in-house. I’m hoping for a decent salary boost but not sure what’s reasonable for small startups (approx. 100 employees).
