Can you survive without having a car if you lived in SF city itself? Not planning to leave SF frequently.

Yes but you’ll need a car to get to literally anywhere outside of SF

like

Should be fine. Prepare to Uber to a good number of places if you’re an out and about type tho

BART, Muni, and Uber/Lyft make it easy to get around. I got rid of my car when I moved to the city and thought I would miss it. The opposite happened - I loved it! Never have to worry about parking, car getting broken into, gas, insurance, car note, maintenance, etc. and there are enough short term car rental companies where you can easily get a car on a whim if you need it.

Hi “Visa”
1. You can absolutely get around most effectively with walking/Uber/e-scooter/public transit/friends with cars.
2. Any car you would have will be broken into/destroyed/stolen.
3. You and/or your friends will talk all the time about “leaving SF to do _____ “ and you never will. Ok maybe once or twice a year.
INVEST in high-end water resistant lightweight shoes, personal protection of your preference, and an extreme ergonomic backpack/personal carrier —- best of luck! 😉

Last word bonus: even fancy Nancy family isn’t safe on billionaires block from local kook army hammer attack, not aiming to be persnickety and hope all remain safe and successful on fantasy island, I too suffered from my own startup Stockholm syndrome until too many close calls + Covid exodus + remote work rescued my *actual daily* quality of life upon exodus to the sunny CA Central Valley(I know: the sushi/sashimi is not recommended here) 😎

Having a car in SF can be a PITA unless you have a place to park where you live. Plus, around the city…no place to park anywhere you go.

Better without a car

I live in sf proper and don't have a car. 0 problems.

I agree with most - you don’t need a car as there’s a lot of public transportation options! Plus, you can always Uber/Lyft to areas where that’s not an option, especially considering the cost of gas, parking, tolls, etc.

With that said, make sure you move to a place easily accessible by Bart and/or Muni,

Yes! Lived here for 10+ years without a car. Between the bus, Uber and aiming for 10k steps a day, it is no issue! I just rent a car or jump in a friend’s for Tahoe or wine country. 😎

like

No car and have been here for a year. (Same as a few people I know). We rent when we want to go hiking- way cheaper than owning and worrying about theft/gas price

Gosh don’t want to be a bummer but there is precipitation + there’s just a lot of liquids like on the street of ….um we’ll…unknown origin, as well as garbage and well ( 💩 ) —- so bonus shoe points for Machine Washable!

funny

100%. I've lived in SF proper for over 5 years. Got rid of my car shortly after moving and have never needed one since.

I have a car (garaged underground parking for $500 a month lmao) and it’s definitely not necessary. I like my car (and driving in general) so it’s useful for me on weekends to get out of the city. But I’d be totally fine without it

I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

There might not be a good answer, but let me know your thoughts. This will be long so will continue in comments. I am a maintenance tech. I started with my company 1 year ago, was recently offered a 3% raise in my review contingent upon acquiring an HVAC cert. that they’re paying for. I currently make $20/hr. I have been told by everyone, including two people in corporate that after completing HVAC cert., I will get a $2 raise. At my review they said that was never an option.

Homebuyers: how did you decide when to put in an offer? We’ve been looking around for about 2-3 weeks (in the East Bay, FWIW). A house we were interested in dropped the listing price by $27K on Friday and then today, our agent texted me saying that the selling agent was “begging for contracts”. We really like the house but there are a few downsides. With the housing market seemingly slowing down, we’re also afraid of buying at the peak of the market. Looking for any wisdom or advice. TIA!
