You better be ready if they call your bluff
I can produce the offer letter if they ask. It's not a bluff
I’ve only seen this work when you actually are prepared to give your 2 weeks. Generally that’s when the company will play ball. Don’t worry about what your manager thinks or how it might reflect on you. No one is going to take care of you but you! I wouldn’t even accept a promise from them for a raise/promotion in the future because they can say no after you’ve waited the 6 months.
Last company I worked for I was promised a raise and promotion within a few months. When that happened I had to ask the status, they said I’d have to wait another few months.. I waited again then they ended up not giving me a promotion and my raise was like 1.5% because “the company can’t afford merit increases this year”.
Make sure you get the promise in writing if they try and make you wait.
Oh my! With that context I’d understand the hesitance to leave your current role.
You can give them the ultimatum, but it only works if you’re prepared to walk away.
I prefer to stay at my company. But if they don't promote me in 6 months or give me a raise, I will leave. I just want my i140 to be approved first
Can be done, it depends on how much your company needs you. I've seen people on critical positions to do this on yearly basis bumping their salaries a lot every time. It's also a company's fault to end up in a situation where deliveries stop if person X leaves.
Your reasoning is 100% correct, especially in this economy. Don't be dishonest, of course, but do what you gotta do.
