I never ask for approvals. I just go ahead and book it.

Can't plan a vaca with my girlfriend not because of busy season but because I don't have one 😭😂

like

When you email your scheduler, CC your counselor and request a read receipt. My scheduler used to ignore my requests too until I started doing that. Really annoying that you have to do that to begin with. Sure, they're busy, but so are you, and you still manage to do your job, so why can't they do theirs? Don't be afraid to hold them accountable.

like

Lol you should follow up. Take your days off if you want

like

Wait, vacation needs approval from partner level??

like

Yup. Just 2 days, it's not like you are asking for 2 weeks or 2 months... I don't see the problems. If i were you, I would just book and let the team know you will be out.

like

Just ask about it. They are busy too. Explain you need to start booking for it

like

At EY you don't really need permission to take vacation. Just say i am blocking off this time fornvacation. I wont be available. This is not school, you are an adult. Just let the partner/scheduler know ahead of time so that yhey can have back up.

like

:/ really don't see why not cuz I just wanted 2 days off after months of busy season before quarter starts on next client

like

@pwc1 even when you are already booked on a client?

like

Yes, just go ahead and take it. It's only two days. Follow up. They probably simply forgot.

like

^Asking for partner approval for a month in advanced before sending to schedulers to book

like

How far in advance did you request the days off?

^cuz we don't have manager level people on the team and I'm the only senior

*for vacation

talk to manager get verbal approval. then email schedule person and cc manager say this was approved please book the pto

I jut email the scheduler and tell her to book vacation and tell her to remove the time from X client - I know that the team can make it work though. If I was unsure I would get manager approval first.

I am a Manager. Just ask...we don't bite...just busy

Hi all, I’m planning to take my first exam in NY. I’m hesitating to take it 1-2 days right before the day of my flight (going on PTO) is it risky ? I know some people got their seat cancelled by Prometric. What are your thoughts ? Thanks

First - thank you so much to this amazing group for all the encouragement and advice! I now potentially have 2 offers (both verbal) at this time. Both amazing companies. I have 2 questions:
1. I have a month's vacation planned for end of this year. I didn't mention it during the interview process (it was not intentional). Should I mention this to the recruiter when they come to me with the initial offer?
2. Some tips for salary negotiations please?

Not gonna lie, I legit thought about taking PTO next week so work doesn't get in the way of me watching prelims.

what difference does 109% vs. 100% utilization make at Year End? Latter basically means you took your PTO, former means you worked every minute of the year (Consulting, S&O)

How are you all feeling about going into the holiday season while being remote? Missing the company holiday parties, or happy to be able to do your own thing?

What’s been your most impressive/successful salary negotiation when you’ve received an offer? Did you manage to get way more PTO or other perks?

I am currently at a firm and received an in-house offer. Aside from main items like comp and big ticket benefits like PTO/health insurance/401k, what other items do I need to think about discussing/negotiating? For example, fees to keep bar licensure, professional association fees, CLEs, etc. I feel like there is so much on that end I currently take for granted being covered at my firm. Anything else I should consider?

I’m a new associate to a T&E group, partner goes away on vacation and leaves me with a 706 to review and sign. The family is very wealthy. Decedent married for 60 years. Partner says it’s “just a DSUE election, decedent was ill for years, no assets.” Provides no records. Not even an admission the decedent owned a toothbrush. So I looked up the decedent’s home - it’s a joint asset. Partner was “surprised”, and still insists “no other assets”. I found file references to art and antiques.

Is it a far fetched goal to get my students where they need to be by the end of the school year? How would you handle a situation like this?

Partners or whomever can help me understand about billing and hours. To keep things simple, let’s say you only have one staff to work 1,700 billable hours a year on a $60k salary and you have only one job that and the rate charged to the client is $300/hour and an projected hours budget of 1,700 hours. So ideally you would have revenue of $510k. If the staff takes less time partners make less money and if they take more time partners make more money while the staff keeps the same salary?

Tax question - I make about $200k and get half of my income from a W-2 and another half from being an independent contractor. Because, I’m subject to pay both FICA and SECA taxes. Do my social security taxes get capped on amounts paid above the ~$140k threshold across both my W-2 and 1099 incomes or am I out of luck and have to pay more than that since only about 100k of my income is FICA and the other 100K is SECA (which is subject to ~12% overall including the ER portion)?
