If your husband commutes by car 3 hours a day, I’d buy a Prius or something frugal like that and just rent when it’s time for grandparents to visit or family trips. You are concerned about spending Too much on gas anyway. Premium or not, 3 hours a day on the road is still a lot of gas. If at all, buy a smaller suv, or a mid size sedan for practicality. Prius might be an overkill, wasn’t a real suggestion, just trying to make a point.
Again, might depend on how often you need the car for family trips and all that. If it’s a few times a month, maybe buying an suv is a good option if it’s a few times a year, maybe not. Focus on what’s the larger % of your usage of the car.
FWIW, I do the same. I have a two door which I bought in 2012. When parents visit, I just rent, it’s worked out great. They visit like once a year max but they stay for a month or so. It’s worked out well so far.
Your husband probably doesn’t want to be seen driving a minivan but man those cars are really capable! I even like how they handle and drive! Most of friends with families have a commuter car plus a family minivan. For 65k, you could consider getting 2 cars! A used commuter and a new minivan perhaps? Just a thought.
Yea minivan is the ultimate road trip vehicle, but with only one kid seems like total overkill unless you have tons of stuff to haul with you and the trips are frequent. If the trips are infrequent, renting is always a great option.
Totally agree with a 3 hour commute something reasonably fuel efficient and with lower operating costs may make more sense.
Also worth noting just about any high end car is going to have a high compression engine that is designed to run on premium fuel. Yes they will adjust to run on 87, but likely at reduced power and efficiency.
And premium fuel is just the tip of the iceberg, everything on a larger, higher performance vehicle costs more... maintenance, tires, brakes, it all adds up.
You want a “luxury” SUV but cheap out on gas? Good luck
Tesla Model X
Used Tesla Model X. If that's not it then def the Volvo XC90.
EY2: my husband would look smoking hot in a 911, I like where your head is at
Y’all are talking about a $65k truck but too cheap to pay for premium. Funny
They’re big, but the Lincoln Navigator has been getting great reviews. More of a truck like SUV, and might be a little higher than your budget
Why don't you get your husband a 911 like he really wants for commuting and taking you to dinner? When you actually need a third row seat which sounds rare AF get an Uber.
Why do you want a 3 row car if you are going to only occasionally transport 5 people in it?
I think any mid-sized car or crossover would be more suitable for a daily commute. RDX, MDX, X3, X5, GLC, GLE.
An Acura would be a smarter move for value, maintenance, and resale.
M2: really just commuting and taking me out to dinner :)
XC90!
We really like or GL450
911’s definitely require premium :)
The Mercedes GLE Orr GLS would be good options too, but they will likely want premium gas like the other German options
Macan is great. Sporty and a good size
Toyota Corolla
Was in same boat - looked at Q7, MDX, XC90, RX and GX - went with Q7... had far and away the best ride/acceleration (with the 3.0 engine), and interior was nearly as good as the XC90. Car was a touch under $65k with all options (before tax)
AC1: thanks for the suggestion, but those are the two brands I don’t want to look at. Just not a fan - and now the Stephen Curry is in an Infiniti commercial, it’s definitely not an option for my husband :)
In my exp, it’s nearly impossible to get car seats into a third row, really only usable with kids using a booster.
