I left for industry about 6 months ago (after 3.5 Consulting years) to work as a corporate strategy manager for a Fortune 500 company. My boss is encouraging me to consider what I’d like to do in my next role at the organization (1-2 year timeline), and have offered to help position me for a promotion in that group when the opportunity arises (director level role). I’ve only been in general strategy and haven’t thought of a function that I’d be interested in pursuing. What are some things I should be considering as I make this decision? Visibility to Senior leadership and impact are two things that are top of mind, but curious if anyone else would approach this with a different viewpoint.
maybe also think about things that you enjoy and be in roles that highlight your strengths
I’d advise two things: a revenue generating function/group and a short, clear path to P&L. When you have these two things, the only thing that slows down advancement is you and leadership views you as someone who can “get things done,” which should break any lingering stigma attached to you being “just a strategy guy.”
