You should take a look through LinkedIn and try to find some copywriting interns at good agencies. See if you can find their books on google. It will give you a sense of what the expectations are and the types of pieces to include. Generally speaking try to aim for 4-5 pieces from different industries.
The hardest part will be mocking it up. But I think there’s a bowl for students on here. You might be able to find an art director to work with you. If you can find a local partner that you work well with it will also make finding an internship easier. Back when I was looking a lot of shops were especially interested in established pairs for interns because it makes the process easier.
Obviously portfolio school is the easiest option. You’d have access to a bigger network and a fire under your ass because you’re burning money to be there.
Jamming with someone else really teaches you how to work with others creatively. It forces you to explain your thoughts to another person which is a fast stress test for the idea and ultimately has a higher chance of giving you something good.
Beyond that, a lot of young copywriters seem to think that they’re in charge of the idea and art directors are just there to design. If you look at most of the work that’s winning awards the copy and art play off each other and both contribute to the success of the idea.
Portfolio school is optional. But if you choose to forgo it you’ll need to find a mentor or something. Feedback is critical.
No. Can be spec. But it needs to be good spec. Take a few classes.
