It's so easy to say Old Spice is amazing and we should be like them. But first prove to us we haven't tried to. Anyone can tell me that. Come on.
Writing good, imaginative, emotional tv is not hard. What’s hard is selling the idea to the client that doesn’t want to move the needle too far because if it doesn’t work, their job is now on the line. This is how it is, and this is how it will always be.
How I know a CD is a hack...they have meetings to sell me on their ability and portfolio...
I like wondering how some spots managed to sell, like the Southern Comfort “whatever’s comfortable” spot with the guy walking on the beach. It’s easy to say how great some spots are once they’re made; it’s much harder to see the potential when they’re just words on a page. Even the original man-your-man-could-smell-like spot was probably tough to “get” just by reading it. In any case, I commiserate. I recently worked for a CD who, frustrated, named all these spots he wanted us to emulate which, I can 100% guarantee you, he would never have seen the potential in when they were in script form.
@copywriter, what are you talking about? Is this referencing this post at all?
