I let the teams present for two reasons. First, they have to learn how to present, and second, nothing makes people more accountable for their craft than having to own it and sell it. I noticed when other people were on the hook for presenting, the work became the presenters problem if things didn’t go well.
Yes, because that’s how you learn to have confidence presenting. I worked at a place where only CDs presented to the boss. When I got promoted and had to present to him I understood why. I would only present for a team to a difficult and demoralizing boss. It’s my job to promote and protect.
Absolutely. I play pinch hitter / support to make sure the ECD sees the promise if the team didn’t quite sell them. But as said before, that’s how they learn, and how we limit the feeling of a velvet rope in the creative dept.
Yes whenever humanly possible. And usually it’s with me and/or my partner there so if, for some reason, the ECD doesn’t like something we’re there to reiterate that (A) we approved the work to show him and it’s not on the team to take any criticism, it’s on us; and (B) help the team sell the work that we all want to make. 9 times out of 10 I’ve also pre-sold to the ECD so that he already knows my partner and I are on board with the team’s ideas (he trusts us) and if there are any issues, we can all solve them together. What helps is having an ECD who is constructive and helpful, if bluntly honest sometimes, with feedback versus some dipshit who gets angry at ideas that aren’t quite there yet, or doesn’t have an opinion at all..which is even worse.He’s a pro and knows it’s a process & team effort. But I never let the team take the hits for anything that goes wrong, that’s on me. And it also helps them have accountability and just be relaxed and confident in selling, knowing we have their backs.
