This is absolutely 100% not true. You do not have to have union crew if you have union talent.

Hey, during my search for DRTV rules this weekend, I came across a treasure trove of talent info, rules, contracts and forms on the Extreme Reach website. Look under the “talent” tab. Hey, you wouldn’t happen to know where I can get a list of rules for Direct response TV, would ya? Like you, all I’m finding are sales pitches. No one wants to share the formula. It’s freaking frustrating!

like

Media services has an online guide to all union rules. Non union generally follow union rules on set but are far more flexible with rate/hours/ team setups etc.

like

If you have one union on set you’re obliged to have all departments. So if you want SAG actors you’ll need to run a union set. You can cast non-union and maybe have some SAG actors agree to work non-union. It happens but don’t count on it. If your client is a Signatory you’ll also need to run a union set or risk a walkout. That should be their decision and not yours. Any really big old company with union employees is likely to be a signatory. New tech company won’t be. Also if your agency is a signatory you’re supposed to but you’re likely to get away with a small non-union job. Droga got called out on doing a big budget spot non union last year. Walkouts are no joke. And happen fairly often. It basically revolves around crew members keeping their healthcare. They need union hours to keep it. They’re not going to stay on your set if it means losing their family’s health insurance. As far as rates and rules on breaks etc and hours go to IASE, DGA and Camera Union sites. Rules are posted for producers and fairly straight forward.

like

Producer 1. If you have one SAG actor you are supposed to pay everyone in your cast SAG rates. And they are also not supposed to work on non-union jobs although they do it all the time. Read the SAG rules. And yes, as a producer, you can run your set however you want but if it’s a big client your local may disagree. It hasn’t happened to me but it has happened to a family member and friends. If it’s a little client and a nobody actor, no one cares and you’ll get away with it.

EP we may be getting our wires crossed. Im not talking about union V’s non union talent. I’m talking about union production crew vs’s sag talent. You do not need a union crew if you have SAG talent and vice versa. If you have one union talent then all talent need to be union. If you have one union crew, then technically it should be a union set with all union crew. If you are an AICP/IATSE production co, you are a union crew and are paid/follow union rules . If you are a SAG sig (agency or client) you have union talent and follow Sag rules which have provisions for what their actors require on set (AD, adequate dressing rooms etc), But you don’t have to have one with the other.

like

Producer 1. I 99.9% agree with what your saying. And legally you’re spot on. So you’re right. Don’t know if you remember the SAG and writers strikes but the unions do sometimes support one another. SAG explicitly states their members should only work on SAG/union sets. But they totally work non union all the time. And the law says whoever should be able to work on whatever set they want. So if you have an all non-union crew you’re good. But if you have union members working non-union they might walk out if someone starts problems. If you have a good crew, likely there are union members in it. So your non union gaffer can work but the union gaffer may have to go home if he wants to keep his card. The way i handle it is I let the crew and the talent agent know there isn’t any money beyond what I’m paying, which is why it’s non-union. But I have run into problems with talent and agents who think I’m The Man. My crews are pretty tight I have not had any real problems with them beside “that’s not my department.”

like

@producer, do you have a url?

Union crew walk out/get caught if they are on a non union set and they rep catches them/gets called in. It doesn’t matter if it’s union or non union talent as long as you follow sag rules if they are union.

Book recommendations? I come from non-Union/low budget line producing but I’m now working for a “real agency”. I’m looking to learn more about SAG processes, working with vendors, bidding process, etc. I know most of this knowledges will come from actually working on projects but I’m curious if there are any good resources out there.

So, I’m leaving and my leadership is pissed. I feel like their attitude is “well you’re leaving so now I just need you so I can download your brain.” and I’ve never felt more like an object and I’m trying not to internalize how guilty I feel about causing others to pickup my slack. Context: solid roll-off plan and I did all of my deliverables for the next month by working through the weekend. Any advice on how to reframe my thinking? Alternatively, AITA?
