I think checking email and organizing your inbox so you don’t come back to 1000s of emails is fine. But I worry about responding to non-urgent matters while on vacation. As managers, what example are we sending to junior staff who likely now assume that they should do the same — even if we tell them not too. It sets a bad precedent? My teams know that if it’s urgent and I’m out, they need to text or call, not just mark something high priority. I really encourage you to lead by example when it comes to work-life balance, especially when on a planned vacation that I’m sure required coverage plans and clients being notified.
Yes to this. I’m currently on PTO and even had to set a good precedent for my client as well. Even though I communicated that I was out and who her points of contact were for our team, she still texted asking to talk at a specific time that worked for her schedule to give me feedback on a plan. She even acknowledged that I was on vacation with my family. I had to politely direct her to the team in the office, who are/were more than capable of handling. I’m sure most of us would have that argument with our spouse or make our kids feel like we aren’t totally present just to take that non-urgent client call (which I’ve done btw), but we all deserve better and should show our teams that by example.
I'm currently on holiday sitting at the beach and firing off emails. 🤷♀️
I check them, as D2 said, to not come back to an overwhelming email mountain. But I try not to respond, and make it clear I don't expect anyone else in the department to check in at all. Just because I have anxiety issues, doesn't mean anyone else should feel the same pressure
On my last vacation, I took the app off of my phone. People know how to reach you if it’s something important. Be the example as 👆Director 2 said.
I check morning and evening only.
Hard no for me. You need to disconnect and recharge.
