Just move to NYC for a year and see if you like it. Assuming you're in consulting and working remote anyway, you can probably move domestically with ease. If you like it, stay longer. If you don't, then go back to Chicago. Your decision won't be permanent.
I've lived in both cities for several years. NYC is great, and worth the experience, especially if you're young and single. But after a few years, it got old, and I got tired of the high rent and I moved to Chicago. Quality of life is fine in both places, but Chicago wins by a mile on cost of living. $2000/mo rent goes much further in Chicago than NYC!

Quality of life is way better in NYC! Come on over.

Chicago is a fine city, but New York is a much better place to live. Itās expensive, but the people are cooler (and nicer, though less polite) and thereās just a greater depth, breadth, and quality of things to do. Also helps that youāll no longer be hub captive to AA/UA/WN.
Downsides are that itās more expensive and less clean, but thatās about it. Summers here are also kinda awful compared to Chicago, but the winters arenāt as rough.

You can probably make NYC work (same quality of life) if you manage to nearly double your income from Chicago before moving there.
Online calculators tell me NYC is ~2x Chicago in COL so. If you can manage that you can probably make it work.
Best wishes!
ahh my cities! i actually love chicago & didnāt want to leave when i moved to NYC to be closer to family last year. but if youāre antsy & want to try NYC & can afford it & especially if you have friends here, you should give it a try. chicago is cleaner yes but NYC definitely has āmoreā. feel free to DM if you want to talk it out with your specific situation!
