Welcome to the wild and weird world of Chicago
Student looking for advice / mentorship.
Hey, I hope you’re all doing good
I grew up in the ME and speak the language, and I want to come back to the region (Intern and FT).
However, I haven’t been too fortunate with ME recruiting, so I would really appreciate some feedback on my resume / general advice.
Attached below is my resume, I do know that its a bit crowded, thats a WIP I promise.
Would love to chat with anyone, thank you!

$3-4k in rent is fairly normal in every major legal market for a 1-2 bedroom.

You do not need to spend that much in Chicago. Avoid the managed luxury buildings. They are not worth it. I rented a 2bd 2bath with parking in the west loop for less than $2500 from a private owner, and I walked to work. I also had an amazing view. I have a corner 3bd condo in the west loop now, and my mortgage/taxes are less than $3k per month. I still walk to work and can see the Sears tower from my living room. You just need to look more.

Rental market is completely different from 1 year ago.
I was paying about $3k for a large one bedroom corner unit last year. (But now I moved to the burbs).
$3300 for a 800 sq ft 1BR overlooking the river. Pricey but also a 10 minute walk from work and can’t beat the view. Also the amenities are great, full floor of outdoor space with grills and indoor/outdoor pool, don’t need to pay for a gym membership, etc. Been living here for 4 years and honestly the convenience makes it worth it.
$4k on a 2 year lease of a townhouse Wicker Park; 3br + 2.5bth, attached 2-car garage, private rooftop deck, approx. 1500sqft. 3 blocks from the Damen Blue Line. I needed the garage and that was a limiting factor for me. Previously, I had $2,700 for a 750sqft 1bed in South Loop + parking, and I never really used the building amenities. I’ll never buy in Cook County.

Crook County*
I pay $2100 for a one bedroom in the Gold Coast. Luxury with a swimming pool and around 700 sq ft. I rented in off market though (winter)

Paying $2500 for a 2bd/2ba, loop. Less than 10 min walk to 8 different big law firms.

It has parking. Boyfriend is just really good at negotiating where as I am hopeless. 🤷🏻♀️
I have a two bedroom in Lakeview for 1750
I pay $3k for an 850 sqft apt in River North. You can definitely find cheaper if you’re willing to live further from downtown. Smaller one bedrooms or junior one bedrooms would run you closer to $2,400 I’m thinking
I’m by the Daley center and pay 2,300 for that much square footage.
Edit: Parking is extra though.

Plenty of places that are more affordable yet enjoyable to live in compared to whichever smaller city you’re coming from.

Try and speak with a locals from Chicago. I lived in a 1 bedroom and paid $1400 per month for a 1 bedroom.
Where are you looking?
I pay 1100 for a 3 bedroom condo on the north end of the city- looking outside of river north/loop/west loop will give you so many more options! I was shocked at first at downtown prices but there are actually a ton of cool neighborhoods to explore that are easy to get to a loop office from- look at like wrigleyville/lakeview!

Consult with a leasing agent vs looking online. Also depends on amenities you want and neighborhood you want to be in.
It depends on what you want. As others have said, if you’re willing to live farther from downtown you can get a 2BR for half that price. I always rented in river north or west loop where I paid $2500 for a 1 BR, but then I bought a house farther up the blue line and I pay the same for a 3 BR mortgage

You don't even have to move further out. Just find a private owner to rent from.
