Do you have status on both? If you have status on one, but not the other, take a status challenge on the other (sign up in advance, provide proof of status on the airline where you already have it) and then fulfill the requirements, which are quite reasonable.
Chicago is a hub for United, so depending on your destination, United may give you more flight options. I like both airlines, but prefer United marginally.

Wait until you get your project, see which airline offers the most flexibility on that project, and go from there. No sense picking one now to only find out it doesn't offer non-stop flights to your next client location.

United's miles are significantly more valuable, and their product has improved significantly over the past couple of years unless you are flying their 50 seaters.
