Christmas bonus..I know we are supposed to be thankful for whatever they give us. I received a decent bonus but knowing how hard I worked and what kind of $ we are bringing in I cant help but feel slighted. We are a small plaintiffs firm..we brought in 4 million and only have 5 employees. Anyone else feel like this..do you just grin bear it and say thank you?

Yes. My bonus was an absolute joke. It’s really a shame.

Sorry.

This is why I left the last boutique firm I worked at and went in house with a utility. We get guaranteed bonuses, GWA, and raises 2x a year and I feel so much more valued. I did so much for my last firm and did not feel like I was being compensated fairly at all. Especially when I was drafting complaints, doing all the discovery, settling cases, getting bill reductions, and was the main person working 90% of the cases without much input from the attorney and they got all the benefit.

Be thankful. Paralegals do not bring in money.

funny

Yeah I mean obviously we are all making a lot more than our salaries for our firms..if they just realized one good life altering bonus after the end if a good year would buy them loyalty and appreciation for years to come..instead we change jobs thinking the next boss will be different.

like

Mine is always extremely low in comparison to workload, performance/work product, and fees collected. I always exceeded billable expectations (which can be challenging in transactional law). Our bonus is 2.5% base salary if we meet billables and an additional 1% for every 50 hours over. They also tack the bonus onto a paycheck, which knocks us all into a higher tax bracket. Once all is said and done, it usually $3-4k. For perspective, my collected fees each year have always been at least $500k

like

I should say I there is a cap (6-7% i believe). That is part of our employment contract. Then you are eligible for a merit/discretionary bonus, but those still rarely exceed $1k

My old firm used to give all bonuses (attorneys and staff) in February - I assume to avoid people quitting right before the end of the year. We always had a busy last few weeks of the year so I guess I understand. But receiving it in February made it feel completely disconnected from my work the previous year. I gave up on working terribly hard at that job - it wasn’t rewarded well. Bonuses sucked and if you were really good at the job they just made you work with the meanest attorneys because they figured you could handle it. My new job doesn’t have bonuses but the overall workload and compensation is much better. I don’t miss the bonus to be honest.

like

Same. Mine is always crap. Like $500. But the associates only get like $750

like

$750 to associates yikes!

like

Can I be nosy and ask what bonus amount y’all received? I give my assistant a cash gift and I want to make sure she doesn’t feel this way after receiving it.

like

I was just notified of my bonus recently. It is a measly $500. I surpassed my billable hour requirement by 100 hours and the collection on my hours billed is over 90 percent meaning I am getting less than 1 percent of my annual pay as a "thank you for your hard work". To say the least I feel miffed. The firm made $140k off of my work after overhead and salary is taken into consideration. We couldn't possibly spare $2500? And on top of that, my state takes near half in taxes. Happy holidays to me. The equity partners are going to be living large this year too. Crazy.

I was a paralegal at a small firm (1 receptionist, 1 paralegal, and 3 attorneys) and I got a $250 Target gift card.

funny

Doesnt seem right..unless they were losing $. I bet they tip their housekeepers better.

My team of 3 brought in a little over a million in revenue my first year at my firm and they gave me $300. Medium plaintiffs firm.
If that doesn't get walked up this year they'll have my resignation on their desk Jan 2nd (lots of other issues with the firm, underpayment is just the tip of the iceberg).

like

Yeah that's terrible

If they’re making millions they should be kicking down the staff helping to rake in the dough otherwise why would you bust your tail to make them rich? It’s gross how greedy people get. Share the wealth stingy @$$ m’fkrs!! The staff needs a few grand more than you need another million. Leave for a place that will bump you 20-30% in salary. The job market is in our favor. Know your worth. You set the bar for how well you are treated

like

Agree. It’s a shame how greedy they are!

like

You are not alone.

OP. What is the amount you received?

In govt, I received $100 cash then $80 the following year lol.
My first private firm, I got $500 holiday bonus, taxed. I was shocked and grateful because I started in October.
Yesterday I received $200 cash. I’ve grateful for all.

I am unsure if my resume is wrong in terms of not tailoring my resume or working for multiple law firms for a few months due to being hired through a recruiting agency.

What should I do to get more callbacks/interviews? Should I reach out to HR/Recruiter directly? Should I get a paralegal cert? Should I do the programs on Forage?

I feel uncomfortable calling myself a Paralegal since I haven’t done any official training, but my job is definitely more than an administrative assistant. Thanks!
