Cleaning off my fridge for this seasons holiday cards and I have a lot of checks for last Christmas from family and friends that I have left uncashed because I know they could use the money for something more useful than I would.
I know I’m very fortunate to be making more in the beginning of my career than many people retire with and I’m always thankful to be in this situation 🙏🏽

Did you tell the people you weren’t cashing the checks? If not, you didn’t really do them any favors because they probably stressed over when you might randomly cash that check one day and throw off an account. They could never actually spend the money.

likesmart

If the person above is right that you can’t cash them after 6 months, it’s a moot point but sure, add the pessimistic take lol

like

You should go cash them and then give them all a check for Christmas. You’ll be like Robinhood

likesmart

Yeah, not cashing a check seems more stressful than anything for the gift giver

like

I really don’t understand why I’d take money I don’t need though if the money stays in this persons account and can’t be taken out after x months?

like

People don’t typically send checks they can’t afford to write. It’s a great gesture not to cash the checks but if you didn’t write a thank you note then you probably have a lot of people wondering if you even got the checks. Perhaps this year, cash them and make a donation in that person’s name or give a lump sum to a local charity you care about. Whatever you choose to do, acknowledge you received their gift. And for those wondering, you should absolutely write thank you notes for all gifts you receive and so should your children.

like

I always call everyone to thank them for their cards/gifts whenever I receive anything, so they know I received it and it didn’t go unrecognized! I do like the donation idea, thank you I’ll keep that in mind for this year :)

like

What I’m hearing from everyone is that you’d take money from someone who could use it more than you and that just sounds greedy to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ everyone has different morals and such, I get that. I just thought I was helping out but now I see I should be taking money from those less fortunate ✌🏽

like

Your heart is definitely in the right place but I agree somewhat with the people above. If I was low on cash and knew I had just sent a check to someone, I’d be a bit on edge if/when that money would come out. Even if there is a deadline to cash a check, it then does leave the giver with a bit of a question mark.
No harm in saying to the giver, “Thank you so much for thinking of me and for the Christmas check, but I really want you to be able to enjoy your hard earned money, so I don’t plan on cashing this.” Or “Thanks for the check - I’ll be sure to save it for dinner together next time we see each other.”
It’s not heartless one way or the other, it’s just sound financial planning! You do have very admirable intentions here though and that’s always nice to see!

I think there is a lot of judgment on the part of OP who is determining for others what they can and cannot afford. Maybe they saved all year so that they could give something to others because it’s important to them to feel like they are giving as part of the season. Maybe by not cashing the checks they OP is viewed as ungrateful and too good for their hard-earned money.

I say all of this as someone who has at one point lived paycheck to paycheck. I know what it is like to save to give gifts and to watch for checks to be cashed. I would be so incredibly offended if someone deemed my gift unwanted and not needed.

like

Why are you still coming for me? Why not respond to your first comment?

I can understand this and it will make me reconsider what I do with checks in the future, but please just let it go already.

Very thoughtful of you!

Isn’t there a 6 month limit on cashing a check?

Probably? I’m not sure, I am shredding these that I found since I’m not cashing them

like

It’s 90 days - the checks are gone yo….

No. After 6 months the bank is not obligated to honor the check—but they can if they choose. There is no expiration.

like

You are 100 percent right, OP! People above are nuts, haha.

I was always taught that not cashing is the “nice” thing to do. (I’ve also been told that some people write checks with hope they won’t be cashed—it’s more of a gesture.)

What a horrible gesture if that’s the case. If I sent a check, I’d 100% assume that the recipient will cash. Why would you write a check if you didn’t mean it?! That’s like saying thanks with a sarcastic grimace. How rude

I’d love to retire by 35. I know about the 25x expenses rule for a 4% withdrawal rate, but how does that account for 401ks that I can’t access until my 50’s? What about real estate?

I’m 26.
•$150k in 401k/IRA
•$220k in real estate (excl. primary)
•$88k in cash/brokerage
• the rest in HSA/primary home/other.

To calculate FIRE, am I only looking at the $88k that I can access readily? Real estate is cash flowing, but not sure how/if to factor in the equity.

Thanks in advance!
