Client is paying money- I get it. But that money is not trickling down to me. So why should I feel guilty for not traveling on Sunday? Is it wrong to have a life? Managers and directors, talk back!!!

Might be the exception here, but I prefer Sunday evening travel. Less people at the airport, more upgrades, you’re at the client location on Monday so you get to sleep well on Sunday night...

like

D5 - I do. I had this career before we met so it has always been accepted that the travel is part of the package.

If you’re not getting paid enough for the sacrifices you are being asked to make then find a job that is more in line with your expectations. I’m assuming you make a more than reasonable amount of money and there are probably other resources waiting to take your position. I don’t mean to sound harsh but we work in a demanding field and are compensated fairly for the most part. My wife works in industry and kills herself and only makes about half of what I make. People wonder what drives the huge disparity between industry and consulting and the sacrifices are a big part. I do agree you should discuss options with leadership so you can attempt to manage your schedule better but understand that without our clients paying for sacrifices firms can’t afford to compensate people the way they do.

I don’t think asking for your Sunday as a personal day is ill informed or whiney. If it is once in a while or even once a month, that’s one thing, we all make sacrifices and pay the price of doing business. But for a weekly gig any longer than 4-6 weeks that’s a bit of a ridiculous ask of the client. Unfortunately it’s up to your mds and director to establish boundaries and project rules of engagement with the clients. They should want to protect their team.

like

Exactly my situation. It’s looking travel Sundays until they are satisfied (project end).

Lowly associate here, but jeez - the entitlement implicit in that post. Yes it IS trickling down to you. You get paid. Sure you need a wlb that works for you, but your post comes off as I’ll-informed and whiney.

Well to clarify, I’m not proud of working those long hours. In fact, Id probably hate it (i work in the public sector). The reason I said it should be expected, is because unfortunately we’re in a somewhat competitive field. The reality of it is that someone wants to be in our spots making how much we make. Another sad reality is that we work for firms who care for the client more than they care for us. The only reason I say ‘be prepared’, is because just like we’re guaranteed a paycheck every two weeks, our super (relatively) nice firms expect us to put the client first. I’m not saying be happy about it. But we can always quit and try something else

No chance in hell am I flying Sunday night and missing the collinsworth slide

like

I’ve been flying every Sunday since March. Instead of whining about it try asking if you could work from home one week a month or fly Monday night and come home Friday night some weeks. Think of solutions.

Sunday night to late Thursday is a reasonable request if:

- meetings Monday morning beginning by 8am
- rest of the week is packed full of work
- it’s understood that this is a short term pace

Otherwise, you’ve got some ground to stand on. I’ve seen too many situations where “it’s just for this project” turns into every project, burning people out. Also, I have zero patience for showing up early and staying late so that we can waste time.

like

SAP yes you read that correctly. For a 5-10 week period it’s not a crazy ask as long as the other two are met.

Putting aside the traveing on Sunday bit, do you really not get paid? 🤔

like

that's a no for me dawg

Old timer here, so remember that consulting is a lifestyle (kinda like the military) which is why we get paid what we get paid because part of that is for the “life we give up”.

In the old days (pre 1995) travel in most places used to be Sun-Fri so M-Th is one compromise made by firms with W/L balance became a thing. As others have said, Sunday travel is not expected or required but your obligation is to arrive on Mondays at a decent time (ie before 11am) so depending on your commute that might require Sunday travel. Yes it sucks but it’s part of what you signed up for when you enlisted (again it’s a lifestyle not a job). Personally I live out west and work back east so unless I want to do red eyes (which I personally hate) I usually give up most of my Sunday since I’m on a noonish flight and get to the east coast around 8-9pm. Again it sucks but it comes with the business card. Just do your time and remember this is what the bonus is really for, not those PPT slides you edit or those meeting minutes you take.

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks
