First off, don’t believe a word any social platform tells you about engagement metrics. We’ve run our own analytics and it does not back up claims about vertical performing better. What matters is the content itself not the format.

Have had this happen so many times now that I always ask the DP to plan the shots for landscape, square, and portrait. Yes it hampers the cinematography, but it saves me a lot of head/heartache down the line...

Welcome to adverti....oh you’re senior

Because 16:9 is the worst aspect ratio for any kind of video if you are planning on using any of the work for social. So many creative departments are so worried about how pretty it will look and not if it’s functional.

This whole 9:16 is a crock of shit concocted by Facebook to juice to their own metrics. As Huge 1 pointed out, the quality of the idea rules, not the aspect ratio. These best practices are a recipe for mediocre advertisers and small businesses to follow in order to optimize the weak results they’re destined to get by being mediocre.

like

Yes, it’s tricky to do this after you’ve shot, but it’s possible. If the engagement metrics on vertical video are accurate, it’s worth the hassle. (And you never have to put that cut in your book.)

SC1 - I’m usually cognizant of that sort of thing but it was never close to a consideration for this piece, which features a lot of wide scenic shots. We even have other specific vertical content ffs. This is what happens when you give too much power to weirdos who say shit like “faces perform better” and “the brand must be mentioned 4 times”.

Always go with an approved shot list. Anything outside is extra. You should also include the social team just in case they need something extra for their posts

This happens now with literally every single thing I cut. Just have to make the best of it and move on. Put the 16:9 on your reel.

The times are changing, social media ads are now becoming a standard as well as gaming platforms, interactive kiosks and smart TV platforms. We got to work with those specs and stay ahead of the competition by challenging our creative, if you’re not, then your agency is not competing effectively and efficiently. You have to also be able to educate your clients on these needs and benefits as well. At the end of the day, this increases your bottom-line advertising is evolving and will continue to do so. It’d be hilarious to see if the Apple Watch begins to support ads — imagine the specs for that.

EP1 - You are exactly right, Instagram allows you to post in the aspect ratio you want. So there is very little defense for posting in a worse format for your content. I’m happy to report we stuck to our guns and the client finally saw the light on this one.

Shoot on a circular image sensor. Any aspect ratio can be chosen in post when shooting on a circular sensor.

Digital strategist. Stupid tail chasing for social posts

Good content is good content at the end of the day but also getting the most visual real estate for your buck is a strong component as well. As a media planner, Instagram vertical video has driven some of the most cost efficient business results for us across a variety of industries and brands.

Don’t let emotions rule your creative decision making because I see it all the time and then we have to explain to our clients and creative teams why their “babies” and “brilliant ideas” don’t work and how they wasted $10MM on a 60 second spot.

Ogilvy 1 to clarify, you’re saying Ogilvy have been asked to create a $10m piece of vertical video?

Lol Ogilvy 1 please hire me if you’re doing $10m shoots

Correct me if I’m wrong, but you’ve been able to do 16x9 video in Instagram for a while now. So why do we still insist on creating crappy, cheap looking crops?

Some content is made now to be released specifically on Instagram stories, I think I that has to be vertical? It’s different than regular Instagram.

@editor 1 yeah, we just had to deliver a 9:16 crop for stories. But then they still wanted us to deliver a 1:1 as well.
