I've asked a few questions for my sister, passing another one along.
Is there defined promotion criteria from LA to SA? Or does it depend on admin chain, org, and/or politics?
She is looking at LA positions now as a potential comeback kid, and while she was at BAH 10+ years ago, she's forgotten the details, though they'd likely be severely outdated even if she remembered.
TIA!

Just start submitting resumes when you see something appealing and let the market decide if it’s too soon

You also don’t need to make a decision. Just apply, if you get an awesome offer make the decision then. If you aren’t getting anything that makes it worth leaving, maybe it’s too soon
I’m also class of 2020, started in Jan 2021 like others, and have literally no idea how I’m supposed to make it to 5 years. Big law is awful.
Just submitted first in-house application today.

Yeah I’m not in L&E either. Maybe straight up pure litigation you get more experience - I’m transactional and thought I didn’t feel ready until I was running deals.
I'm also c/o 2020 and just went from big law to in house L&E. To be fair, most positions I've seen want at least 5 YOE, but I managed to find a position seeking a junior so it is definitely possible.
Same. Class of 2020, just went in-house. Also L&E background.
Context is that I started work in 2021 like a lot of people because of the pandemic, and was wondering whether companies are looking at class year vs actual time worked.

I am class of 2021 and I’ve had success with my in-house search. Consider that in can take 6 months, at which point you will be in the middle of your third year. Perfectly acceptable time to move on.
5YOE is usually the best time

I’d say 5 YOE
To do L&E in-house you need some client counseling experience. There’s no harm in applying if you see openings, but focus on getting as much counseling experience as you can. The litigation helps because so much of what we do in-house has the focus of trying to avoid litigation, but 90% of my day is counseling clients.

Yeah I didn’t feel competent enough until at least year 3 and the confidence still wasn’t there until approx 5 years.

I’d give it a few years still but what do you want to do?
Yep, I’m currently in L&E right now—basically a years worth of exp in that and a year in gen lit.

Years of experience and what you’ve done matters more than class year. Most in house legal teams don’t have time to train up junior lawyers - you need to be able to manage the workload and know enough to be self sufficient.
Between 3 and 5 years out. It could take a year or more to get your first in house job.
