Make friends with your secretary and paralegal because they will be the ones to save your a$$ when needed. They can also fill you in on what the cliques are and how to navigate that.

Make sure you stay organized and get added to to the calendaring system on all your matters so you don’t miss a deadline. Enter your time on time (…I say as I’m a week behind in my own time entry 😂). And don’t write off any of your own time!!!! Establish good communication with your practice group leaders or the partners and seniors you’ll be working the most with.

Show them respect and know that they likely know more than you at the moment until you get more experience. And hopefully there is a genuine connection, but if not, you can at least have a very strong professional relationship with them.

So, I'm happy at my current job and have been there about 18 months. Our pay is probably 15% below market (AmLaw 100) but so are our billable requirements. An interview for another firm kind of fell into my lap, and I'm debating whether to take it just for the sake of seeing what market really is. Is there something shady about interviewing somewhere you're not totally committed to accepting an offer from?

To all those in management, how do firms that haven’t instituted pay cuts/furloughs manage to do that? Is it because their clients are still paying the bills, because they are borrowing money, because partners just won’t see profit this coming year? Some combo?

Hi! I’m a junior associate at a big law firm in NYC, and I’m considering a move to Dallas. I’m 28 and single, originally from Texas but have lived in the northeast/midwest since graduating from high school. Has anyone else made a similar move to the south? Thoughts on living in the Uptown area?

I got an offer from firm 1 before the memorial holiday and have been stalling because I am waiting for an offer from firm 2..
I was working with a partner from firm 2 who got me an interview with the managing partner.. I got a verbal offer last week.. the staff told me they are processing the paperwork.
Should I still wait for firm 2? I feel like I can’t stall anymore.. I feel like I really should give firm 1 a response this week 😮‍💨 but I don’t want to lose both offers

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

Need advice. Am in the middle of parental leave right now and my spouse and I are on the brink of divorce. Have only this 1 kid. Spouse doesn’t work yet, but can with earning potential around $50k. I make around $450k. No way I’d keep this job if divorce happens. I’d eventually transition in house so I can take care of my kid when I have him, but that won’t be immediate. How will custody work in that case? I want joint, but how do I take care of him alone with this job in the meantime?
