Companies need to not dilute diversity with this whole diversity of thought jibberish - there are real issues re: bias, race, gender and respect in the workplace. Education around how to build better

I would argue that diversity of thought is what brings real value to an organization. A white guy and black guy both from Greenwich both from Yale UG, both from HBS are probably going to think pretty alike. Now a white kid from Greenwich and a black kid from Baltimore are probably going to have very different thought processes. And that diversity of thought prevents groupthink, raises new perspectives, and leads to better idea generation. Both are "diverse" but only one has the benefits of diversity of thought. Not trying to diminish the existence or even prevalence of racism, but I don't think racial diversity should be the only goal. I also hate the term dog whistle, but that's a whole different discussion.

Completely agree with @Pwc1. Diversity shouldn't be done for the sake of defeating racism. Diversity is great precisely because it promotes different thought processes. You're putting the cart before the horse, OP.

Understanding of injustices that have led to where we are today and the mindset needed to move forward is a better use of energy and time. Ppl should read more, be mindful of dog whistle politics etc

I'm not saying that I don't believe in it. I don't think it should anchor what diversity is. It dilutes real issues/opportunities organizations need to tackle. I'm mad because I don't think my organization gets it. I think it's been commercialized in a way that does not create a real way for people to respect others. It's crazy b/c this stuff shows up in ways that can negatively impact ppl in ways you won't believe in thinly veiled/biased comments etc. I've seen it happen and it makes me so sad and upset

PwC 1 again I think diversity of thought is important but it should not anchor diversity programming etc... the real issue/problem is unconscious bias. Also a black dude and white dude from Greenwich aren't the same AT ALL. Whether recognized or not the social experience is very different. I can't tell you how many times Ex: I guarantee you there are views as to how one person got to where there are vs another (black ppl who are in "high places" -more so than other minorities- are seen as having gotten there not on ability/merit but because they got a "helping hand" -- this mindset creates bias in and of itself), I've seen ethnic ppl in high level positions etc even treated different re: greetings from complete strangers, list goes on... dealing head on with the issues/unconscious bias is where focus needs to be

I think the common framing of "why is diversity good for business" tends to include this idea that diverse groups make better decisions, but it's a line of reasoning that does lead to the question "then why only race/gender/sexual orientation and not all these other attributes I could think up that influence how we think?" It's frankly not the only logic for ethnic diversity but it's an important one so it's important to be able to address this quibble. In the end I think it's more of a logical detour than a conclusion, but depending on the audience and context, sometimes it helps get people onboard to play out their line of questioning and let them come around to the obvious conclusion that the most impactful diversity gaps are the classic ones. With a larger audience, it can be frustrating for the others to wait for the discussion to come back on-topic after addressing these quibbles.

Alright so fine there were not many diversity initiatives in the past and not a huge push to create more diversity in organizations. But now is the time you can change that. Moving forward you can put these these initiatives in place.

is it a red flag to you if your decently sized mid law firm has never once mentioned pro bono opportunities? we don’t have any kind of diversity initiative either and obviously i know how i feel about THAT. but was wondering how weird this part of it is.

I recently got married and started talking to my sister in law more often. She addresses me as “Bro” EVERY SINGLE TIME. She knows I identify as female. I would rather be addressed by my name. How can I handle this situation? We are still forming a reltnship & don’t want to hurt that process. I’m Indian.
