Companies that produce alt-right banners and other merch, being wielded as clan identifiers for hate orgs and ultimately insurrectionists...someone had to design them, right? Innocent cash grab, or complicity?

I feel they are complicit. Freedom of speech protects you from the government, not public opinion. If a company engages in unethical behavior like spreading hateful ideology for money, then the public can and should condemn them for their reckless and complicit actions.

Great point.

My god my dude. No one is saying storm front banners and bumper stickers is what caused what happened at the Capitol bldg. OP was asking about the people who design and profit from the act of making that shit and inferring that there may be some complicitness there. Punisher patches and black "blue line" flags don't create police violence against minorities. And it fuels the mindset of aggrevied white cops that they are an armed force patrolling the streets of Iraq, not a US city. So yeah, the people that make that crap are Shit people too. Because it contributes and hurts, doesn't help. But no one is saying to put the graphic designers and tshirt/bumper sticker makers onto cattle cars. It's shit behavior on their part and it sucks. I'm not gonna sit here and check what to say right now, in this moment in history, because if I don't yelp about their first amendment right to do so, Im gonna wake up in Orwell's 1984 tomorrow. Try some nuance in your thinking. They can be free to make their crap legally, but not free from us making judgements about the crap they make and how it helps or hurts democracy. After WW II Germany banned any public displays of imagery associated with the Reich and Nazis. Today they are doing pretty good as a democracy. So before getting all "Wake up sheeple!", look around yourself.

Would never work for a cause like that. Would vocally oppose it at work. Without hesitation.

That is an absurd statement. And yes, in fact if the only kind of graphic design I could ever do that would feed my kids was hateful, harmful design, then I’d change careers.

If you work at a company that skews more liberal, it’s just as realistic there are companies specifically targeting conservatives. Local ma and pa shops offer design services - having worked for both a non profit gun company and a printing franchise - I’ve seen several sides of this. What my franchise owner in rural Alabama prints or designs, I have no exposure to - that owner may be a supporter of extremist causes and likely I wouldn’t be aware until official complaints were brought to attention. That doesn’t apply to locally owned operations who print whatever they please. Working for the pro-gun organization, it was my first job out of college in a new state and I took it because I needed to pay rent. I left as soon as I got another job, but my boss and coworkers went on to start a conservative design agency. Where there’s demand, someone will move to fill it. My personal opinion is that it’s not sustainable for your career if you’re promoting things that are directly against what you stand for - in order to get up every day and create you should be passionate about what you do and who you do It for. I fully understand that’s not immediately achievable for everyone, but it should be what you’re working towards and if you are in this situation - try to compartmentalize what you can learn to help your career and get out when you can.

Portland Antifa is too busy to fly out and storm the US capitol because KFC client needs a media presentation from Wieden that day. Plus spent all the airfare money on Deadstock coffee.

Certainly there are designers and printing companies who agree with the far-right beliefs. That’s who produces these things. Certainly some manufacturers might not know what certain messages/logos mean. And the customer can just lie about the meaning. Especially with online vendors where the vendor doesn’t know the customer.

like

That’s a fair point, definitely the ones making it must share the beliefs. But even if not, I don’t believe for a second anyone can play dumb with that.

I would also like to add, I had never seen any QAnon branded (if you can call it that) merch until I just saw this picture. A tshirt seems meaningless, but its a little thing that helps solidify the legitimacy of identifying with something like QAnon. “Trust the plan”, masquerading with the American flag and eagle.

Right! I’d have a hard time finding that at Walmart, even.

Thank you for a constructive perspective.

My Senior Manager & Partner are basically “forcing” us to take vacation during the week of 20th Dec and 3rd Jan. They’re saying if we don’t have billable work (even though we’re available to work), we should use vacation days instead of charging time to a GA or PRD code. Is this even legal? I was supposed to go home but can’t because of travel bans. I want to save my vacation days so I can go home in April, not take vacation to sit at home. How do I navigate this?

Need some guidance, I love the variety in work that consulting provides but I dislike the waste in work from churn and the travel that will come back at some point, is there a career out there that is interesting without either of the other two?

Thinking of applying to BCG, but what I want to know is how much life science work one can truly do at BCG (%-wise and what kind - e.g., TA strategy, P&MA, due diligence), and is the WLB worse (this might be a no brainer but I’m genuinely curious if anyone can speak to how it compares to ClearView). If it is worse, do BCG folks feel like the comp makes up for it? For context I have a PhD with <2 YOE. I’m also curious on whether folks think WFH is here to stay as an option for BCG in the future
