Company is raffling a pack of beer and a gift card to a sports bar for International Beer Day. Thoughts as an HR professional? Yay or nay?

Unless there’s a HR policy that specifically states no drinking on premises, then there shouldn’t be any issues. Even then, as long as the person receiving the pack of beer doesn’t proceed to pop a can open in the office, it’s fine.

May want to think about offering an alternative in case the person doesn’t drink. I know that’s strange, but I have seen it happen with alcohol gifts/prizes.

like

I used to work for Heineken (beer company) and we prohibited this practice in 2006. Plus this is not inclusive of people that have any substance abuse disorder, pregnant women, people on meds that aren’t compatible with alcohol, and just women and men not interested in sports bars

Would think about the tone/culture you’re setting and if the experience is inclusive of employees who are sober

like

Just make sure you are celebrating plenty of other types of days (pancakes, taco, whatever) so that you don’t unintentionally imply an alcohol emphasis in celebrating.

Maybe gift card and root beer (cheeky for national beer day)???

I think you should really sell the gift card as the highlight and the beer is an add on, Upon winning you could also allow the winner to choose if they want to take the alcoholic or non alcoholic beer (choose a good one!) Problem solved !

It feels like the responses the OP is giving on this are defending the 6 pack of beer. That’s fine if the decision has been made to move ahead with it. But then why challenge input if there is a strong lean one way? It’s a big risk that is being taken but it really is up to your company to decide the tone, culture and more importantly - the precedent - this will set.

All employees in your company need to be above 21. If you employ interns and they are below 21 and they partake in anything from the winner, you could be potentially held liable as an employer, depending on your state. Better to cover all bases and not do the pack of beer. The gift card is totally fine

Nothing can be used on company property, just a take home gift for the 21 or older winner

Why not?

Must be 21 to enter?

Yes it's listed as if under 21 they are only eligible for the gift card

like

As an argument you should ask management why it’s that and not a pack of unisex cosmetics from Sephora, plus a gift card to spa

Thematically appropriate sure, but maybe not so inclusive of people that don’t drink. But then, this raffle wouldn’t appeal to them anyway. As long as you have other stuff too should be fine

For a myriad of reasons, nay.

Any quick fixes on burnouts? Have been working at least 200% since September last year. I have multiple big deadlines all due today, and I have been writing slides while crying for the last 2 hours – it’s just slow and painful. Need to pull myself together and just do the work because well, I need the job, and in this economy no one else is hiring.

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!

I'm about to interview for a VP position at a startup but have never managed before. Is it smart, as a Black woman, to ask directly about support for mangers (ie supporting me is one of my reports didn't want to listen to me, etc)? Or maybe I can ask but very vaguely and indirectly? This is a 2nd (3rd, 4th & 5th over the course of the next 2 days) interview that includes the founders of the company.
