Company that I applied to seems interested and gave a salary ballpark that’s way above my current pay. They want to know what I make now. Do I have to tell them?! I’m worried this will lower their offer!

Just lie and say you’re 15% below what they gave you

like

Deloitte can if verifying through The Work Number, or at least it did as of a few years ago. At the time, they gave verifiers options to view employment or employment + income data.

Don’t tell them! You are not obligated to. Just say something like their salary ballpark is of interest to you and you would like to discuss details when you are through with all the interview steps.

like

Just ignore the ask and see if they actually follow up.

like

In many states it is illegal for employers to ask you for your current salary.

like

I checked, unfortunately nothing about it in my state

Dude lie. There is absolutely no way they can prove this in a background check.

like

Yeah I had to fill out some paperwork for a background check recently and there was an option to request income verification

No you dont have to tell them. In NY and CA it is illegal to ask. Give them a range if you need to or tell them around what they are offering. Also talk about complete package.

like

KPMG makes it firmwide policy to not ask due to these state specific rules.

like

"I'm looking for $X/I'd be interested in offers that pay at least $X" is how i'd answer that

Based my market research x role pays x range for x certs, Yoe, and exposure. I am looking for x range to comfortably make the transition. Don’t tell them your number and get caught in a lie.

...make up a number for your current salary

Don’t lie , just say you are not comfortable with sharing current compensation.

I don’t think it’s legal anymore to ask someone their current salary

Trying to decide between two portfolio ops roles, both in the Bay Area: Small-ish VC firm, ~135k base + 35k bonus Medium PE firm, ~115k base + 115k bonus Which would you choose? I’m leaning towards the PE firm bc it’s more hands-on, faster learning curve, and higher TC, but the VC role seems to have a better WLB and generally sounds cooler (getting exposed to VC vs continuing in the corporate world). What do you think?

Product Management - I am somewhat interested in trying to move into product management. I have led internal analytics product development at a prior firm, and have led clients through developing/improving “products” for their teams to use however I have not led “consumer facing” products and my experiences have not been as “formal” as many PM roles ask for. I work in healthcare and would want to stay there. I’m wondering if others have any thoughts on these transitions.
