SC1, you are correct AFAIK. There is no uniform standard for WLB across most consulting organizations, it varies across locations, and even within the same location, based on who you work for. I have some SM’s reporting to me who take care of their team and try to ensure that they leave on time most days; and of course there are a few exceptions, who just like to work hard (not smart) and make others do the same. As a Partner, I’d always choose the former, since it makes sense from both an employee well-being and a commercial aspect. Those teams where people work normal hours (and you have worked to set boundaries with the client), you generally respond to extra work by asking the client: “It will either take longer to complete, or I can bring more people in, to ensure the delivery date stays the same”. In the other (workaholic) situation, my negotiating power as a Partner is handicapped by my team having made the client believe that they can do everything, and that the client “owns” them 24/7. As for those of my Partner peers (I’ve only heard of them on this board, haven’t met a lot in person), who believe the client is always right, and the team doesn’t matter, I think they are in a race to the bottom.

This thread is all the reasons I quit consulting in 2018 😂 esp big 4 consulting where living to work is the norm. All those with health issues please take care of yourselves and GTFO of your situation while you can still redeem your personal and/or family life back. No point in chasing the big carrot if you’re miserable and unable to even handle the essential things that matter most. It’s definitely not worth it! Pursue the light at the end of the tunnel and don’t look back!
