I was on the other side of this at one point in my career, my new manager came in for a casual get to know you meeting before her actual start date. She took the meeting very seriously... had a ton of formal questions for me, I almost felt like she was interviewing me. I was not prepared for it, and it made me super uncomfortable. It depends on your personal style, but I would suggest a more casual approach. If you’re going to be working together, start to build a relationship, get to know this person. What’s important to them? Both professionally and personally. How have things been going? You could learn a lot from them, but try to make it less of an interrogation.

This is exactly what I was saying.

My experience is that people like to talk about themselves and they have a better impression of you when they do the talking (lol human nature). You can probably ask 3ish simple questions. Tell me about yourself and your role here; what do you really like about working here; where do you want to grow; what does it take to be successful with our clients here; what do you want to ask me.

If I were on the receiving end of this meeting I would just like a casual meeting, Discuss each others backgrounds, not being interviewed. . . and then great opportunity for you to assess the company some more!

Meet n greet and listen first then share similar things back to what they shared (if they talk dogs, talk dogs, if they talk work, talk work)

like

Listen to the individual and learn about them and who they are. They have a story to tell listen to it and figure out what makes them tick without being invasive. The working relationship details will come with time. Even if this meet is not a formal part of the interview process that first impression can have a impact on the offer if the hiring manager asks questions of the subordinate.

Oops, sorry! I meant to reply with it to a different comment. I agree with your perspective.

funny

Did you get an offer? Or will this person have a say in hiring process?

Isn’t it a bit unusual? They don’t even know if you gonna accept an offer, but already schedule meet&greet? If you want to go with that I would’ve asked: 1) What would be your top 3 priorities in HR that need attention right now? 2) What are your career aspirations and development plans? 3) What’s your favorite thing about this job? What do you like to do the most, and what is least interesting part of your responsibilities?

helpful

Ask them what they don’t like about their current role and/or company so you know what the current struggles are with this employee. Ask them, ”If I accept this role, whats one think you would want me to focus on or want to change?” You can tell a lot about a person based on how they respond.

I wouldn’t do it. It may come across as negativity. The person can get defensive...

Second round at a boutique shop and it’s a case interview.. anyone heard of that for a director with 11 years consulting experience already?

Booked a flight in March with chase points that I cancelled bc if covid (~75k pnts). United told me I needed to re book in a year. I called to see if they could extend, they gave me a voucher for ~$1k that lasts for 2 years. Just got a notification from chase that my flight was cancelled and they refunded all the points. I now see the voucher and the redeemed points on the apps. Did I get lucky and get to keep both or is chase/United going to realize when I try to redeem one or the other?

I know we all love the work from home (or do we?) but does anyone actually miss traveling for their consulting engagements and all the fun that goes along with it? The late nights at the office then the bar and random hookups and excitement and all that? Sure it’s a grind but I think I actually miss it too. Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.
