Ssshhhhh! Secret--you can still have good exit apps from lifestyle firms too. Reclaim some sleep and social life!!!
No advice but wondering how you do 300 hour months. Not trying to emulate, just curious.
Haha definitely wouldn’t recommend! I don’t have a life at this point. My practice area requires a lot of overnight, weekend and fire drill type work. As bad as it sounds, I feel like it would almost be OK if it was guaranteed 15 hour days during the normal waking hours/weekdays, but it’s the all-nighters/sleep deprivation/no chance of having a weekend aspect of it that just make it unbearable.
I’m in a similar boat. Leaning toward the one with better exit options because I don’t see myself at a firm forever and I hate not feeling like I have options. But really struggling to decide too!
What is it that you think will be an improvement between your current firm and your new exit opp firm though? If it’s just more of the same, is there a reason to go there and give up the relationships and cache you’ve built up at your current firm? Or is there some other benefit to go there?
How confident are you that the lifestyle firm is more lifestyle vs just a sales tactic from them? You said it’s the same pay, does that continue through senior levels? A lot of times more lifestyle firms have more blackbox (which almost always means lower) pay for seniors. Are you highly interested in the specialty? Do you see in-house lawyers in the specialty field and what is their background? If so, there’s fewer exit options but as one of the narrow pool of specialists, you’ll be one of the few good candidates for such a role in a few years.
Good luck!
