Considering a move to Chicago area. Looking around North Shore. How is it different than Oak Park or LaGrange? Is HP too far north to commute to the loop?

I moved to the N Shore after living in Lincoln Park bc we started having kids. Moved here from LA originally. Needed to be by a body of water. Not a fan of areas west of Chicago, although homes are cheaper. Great schools up here, safe environment, and beautiful - besides the forested environment, we have great beaches. Train takes an hour to downtown. But I drive - that’s the LA in me, plus I need the drive to prepare my head for the day and I don’t like to check my watch as to when I need to bolt out of the office to catch the train. I’m just north of HP.

How long was the drive from your area to Leo?

I heard park ridge is a nice place to go. Recently heard of a few families moving there.

I live in the city but go around the suburbs pretty regularly. The North Shore is older and much more wealthy than other suburban areas, and if you’re a Jew, more populated with our people. Highland Park is about an hour on the Metra to Ogilvie, so if your office is on that side of the loop it’s convenient, but add at least another 20 minutes if you need to get to the other side. Oak Park is nice because it’s also old and has more character, but it’s a bit of a bubble—the area of Chicago that borders it is rough. Evanston has a nice balance of urban amenities, separate from Chicago, and with L access and could be worth a look!

An hour and 15 if some knucklehead didn’t fk up the commute. There’s an express lane when you transition from the Edens to the Kennedy.

Grew up in HP - highly recommend. Great area - Parents still live there. Hubby is from western suburbs. Even he agrees the north shore is better LOL. Very easy to get to the city. Metra is nice and if you drive traffic isn’t bad as long as you leave at the right times.

A lot of it depends where your office is. If you’re headed to WPP in the West Loop, it’s literally 5 minutes from the suburban trains. If you’re headed to Leo/Publicis it’s like 20 minutes. IPG is even farther than that.

You should be aware that the Metra North trains keep banker's/NYC financial market hours, not ad agency hours---trains skew early morning and then thin out after 6pm. One CD who lived in Glencoe complained, and got that explanation. It's why I, like many, drove. Lake Shore Drive in the am is crowded but a pretty drive.

Starting full-time @ MBB this month. I’m really interested in recruiting growth equity (GE) at some point. I’m pretty familiar with PE recruiting but not sure how growth differs. Anyone have perspective on any of the following: 1- Does GE recruit on cycles? If so what is the typical timing? 2- Are modeling tests standard as part of the interview process? 3- How are consultants perceived in the industry? 4- Do large GE firms utilize headhunters? 5- Do large GE firms have operating roles?

I went T2>MBB and am thinking of going back to T2 because I prefer to aim for partner (MBB is not sustainable for me) rather than taking industry exit... Is this a dumb move? I’ll be dropping pay slightly but with better working hours one step below partner vs industry at ‘head of’ level...

I won’t be upset if he does because that’s on him, but I feel so insecure about how ridiculously poorly I’m doing in life:(. Just wanted to let it out
