Considering a move to Denver from Austin, TX. Pretty tired of the heat and regressive politics of Texas. Curious to know if anyone in the Denver bowl moved from Austin, how they feel about it, and what they’d say to someone who was considering the move.

Come to California.
San Diego - Amazing weather year round .
Added bonus - best tacos ever

I got such a nice bump in pay by moving to San Diego from Denver, that it wasn't bad (although buying a house is still hard). Denver still doesn't get the respect (within EY at least) for how expensive it is.

I lived in ATX for a while (not originally from TX) and now live in Denver. Weather, outdoor activities, and politics much better here. Austin has way better food and nightlife though.

like

Denver has great food as well. I don’t know why people shit on the food scene here

Not to be that guy he we barely have enough resources to support all the current residents. Don’t move here

Haha E1 is spot on. Denver is honestly one of the best cities in America, but it's overcrowded with people and the culture of classic / native Denver has been totally supplanted with by transients.

like

Were FULL! Do not come here! Im a #Native! Moved last march

Pretty sure like 50% of CO residents are originally from Texas

You can tell them apart from the natives because they buy Jeeps and think they don’t have to learn how to drive in snow if they have AWD / 4x4

Texas sucks

Denver sucks too. Don’t do it. Grew up here and I’m looking to get out. It’s lost all its good aspects.

I lived in DFW for 6 years and spent a lot of time in Austin, now back in Denver.

Denver Pros: all four seasons, sports teams, mountains, activities
Denver Cons: dating, high COL, food isn’t anything special
Texas Pros: food, dating, nightlife
Texas Cons: heat, politics (depending where you stand) and still pockets with high COL

I think it just depends on what your priorities are right now in life!

Appreciate the reply! The mountains and outdoor activities as well as the 4 seasons are the greatest appeal to me.

Dallas to Denver was the best move I ever made

Currently in Denver, moving to Dallas next year. It’s not for me personally if you’re in the settle down phase, white picket fence, and a dog then sure but if you’re looking for excitement I wouldn’t recommend. The mountains do not stay exciting forever but the people are REALLY NICE

likefunny

I lived in Dallas for 2 years and agree with MC1. If you like any kind of outdoor there is literally nothing to do. Weather was terrible. People were aggressive. Traffic was awful. So much road rage and stupid angry driver. I experienced shooting on the train and the shooter wasn’t even charged (he also worked for the same firm I was at). It was cheap. But you cannot pay me to move back.

I love Denver, but it is expensive and HOT. Husband is also concerned the state will be on fire in the very near future - the Marshall Fire was terrifying. It’s largely why we are holding on buying a mountain house (well that, and the ridiculous prices). Husband and I are considering where we could move for more moderate climate. It felt like it was in the 90’s just about every day this summer - doing anything outside isn’t fun in that weather.

I’ve also heard the dating scene is hit or miss, unless you’re an attractive guy with a well paying job. Lots of underemployed men, few women. Almost all of my female friends are the breadwinner. It was certainly a mindset adjustment for me (I wanted to be a SAHM, but fell in love with a guy making $60k with an earning cap not much higher than that). So - you can certainly find someone, but it might look different than you expected.

Austin >>>>>>> Dallas though. I lived in Dallas for 5 years prior to moving to Austin.

Moved to Denver from Austin about 6 years ago. No regrets. We have all four major sports, food and music scene gets better every year, and you can’t beat the mountains. Four seasons with amazing summer weather. Most tourists go to the mountains, so you don’t get the huge influxes of bachelorettes, concert goers, etc. that you see in Austin. Respect the locals. PM me if you need more.

If you want to be active and have adventure it doesn’t get better than Denver. Our food is not great, culture is meh, and general city scene is lacking but the nature is just absolutely ridiculous.

Came from Chicago (which I loved) and idk that I could ever leave here.

My friend moved her from Austin and loves it. Part of it was work - she couldn’t do her “dream job” there. Partly politics - refreshing to live in a state that believes in things like woman’s bodily autonomy. And of course everyone loves mountains.

My opinion on Denver: It has all the outdoor activities you could want. Very young, tons of activities in the city to do as well. Sports if you’re into that. Dog friendly. Very fit / healthy. People are nice and genuine.

Rent / houses prices are super high compared to the average income. Can’t get a house unless you make $150K or want roommates. The outdoor activities (skiing) are great but you might sit in traffic 4 hours just to go skiing for a day or you have to pay for lodging for the weekend.

So if the outdoor activities are worth it to you…pay the premium to live here. If not, look elsewhere.

Politics aside, this is a pretty apt summation.

Please, please, please leave. Denver is great and you will absolutely love it. Check out 1000 Speer best apartment I ever lived at hands down.

Long time Austinite here. We’re moving to Ft Collins in a few months. For all the reasons folks have already listed that make CO great, but with a lower cost of living and slower pace of life than Denver.

For reference, I’m 33, have two toddlers, and my hubs is transitioning out of tech to a lower paying career.
